We spent a night at Sexquisite for their pride event, Slut Heaven, at the iconic Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club (BGWMC). With a buzzing crowd, stunning performances and emotions high around the news of the closure, it was a night to remember.

What’s Sexquisite? The show platforms the manifold skills of sex workers, from full-nudity strip teases to heartfelt poetry and song. They have grown from a 2019 student project by founder Maedb Joy to a thriving collective with sell-out shows. The BGWMC has always been their home base, but unfortunately its members have now voted to sell the venue.

Next week’s event on July 25th will be the last Sexquisite hosted at the BGWMC, so there’s still a chance to catch the action.

The results from the general election are in and Tower Hamlets once again proved itself to be a Labour stronghold.

Rushanara Ali retained her seat, now Bethnal Green and Stepney, with a slim majority of 1,689. Independent candidate Ajmal Masroor who ran a pro-Palestinian, anti-Ali campaign came a close second, winning 14,207 votes to Ali’s 15,896.

Apsana Begum was victorious in Poplar and Limehouse for the second time, winning a majority of 12,560. Nathalie Bienfait of the Green Party came second with 5,975 votes.

Uma Kumaran was elected as the first MP for the new constituency of Stratford and Bow, after winning a majority of 11,634. The Green Party ranked second, with 7,511 votes.

Voter turnout was lower across the borough than in 2019, in line with national trends that saw turnout decrease from 67% last election to 60% yesterday.

Labour’s Rushana Ali won by a sliver in the hotly contested seat of Bethnal Green & Stepney with independent Ajmal Masroor close behind. See the full results.

This morning, the news was out that Sir Keir Starmer had made history and won the general election with a landslide, but who did the people of Bethnal Green & Stepney vote for here in Tower Hamlets?

It was a tight race in this constituency. We knew there was a concerted campaign by independent Ajmal Masroor to topple Labour and get rid of Rushanara Ali, who has been MP for Bethnal Green and Bow (now Bethnal Green and Stepney) since 2010.

Back in 2019, Rushanara Ali won 72.7% of votes and had a majority of 37,524, but this year there wasn’t a lot separating her from Masroor. Read our article with the full results. #GeneralElections2024 taken in Bethnal Green by @bethnalgreenldn
