โ€œThe Prayer for the IDFโ€ is one of the most powerful prayers Iโ€™ve had the privilege to sing, especially over the past three years.

As we mark October 7th this week, we honor the memory of our fallen soldiers and security forces who gave their lives defending our home and families.

May their memory be blessed forever. ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

A medieval parable about not letting go, and what bereaved Israeli families are teaching us about it.

Tomorrow marks three years since October 7. For many Jews, the anniversary has already come.

On the Hebrew calendar in the Diaspora, the massacre fell on Shemini Atzeret, the festival at the end of Sukkot; in Israel, that same day is Simchat Torah. This year the date, the 22nd of Tishrei, fell last Shabbat. At Beth Tzedec in Toronto, we recited Yizkor, the memorial prayer, on the Hebrew yahrzeit of the attack. On Wednesday, the civil calendar catches up.

That double anniversary has sharpened a question every bereaved community eventually faces: what does it mean to stay loyal to the dead?

As Israelis prepare to head to the polls, join Donniel Hartman, President of the @shalomhartmaninstitute, for a timely exploration of the challenges and opportunities facing Israel as voters prepare to shape the countryโ€™s next chapter. How might the election influence Israelโ€™s future direction? What values and tensions are shaping Israeli society? And what could this moment mean for Jewish peoplehood and the relationship between Israel and Jewish communities around the world?

Following his remarks, Donniel will join Rabbi Steven Wernick for a conversation examining what is at stake in this pivotal moment.

Presented in partnership with Shalom Hartman Institute of Canada. There is no charge but pre-registration is required at the link in our bio, or bit.ly/oct-14-hartman ๐Ÿ‘ˆ

Rabbi Dr. Donniel Hartman is president of the Shalom Hartman Institute and holds the Kaufman Family Chair in Jewish Philosophy. He is author of the Boundaries of Judaism and Putting God Second: How to Save Religion from Itself. His latest book, who are the Jews and Who Can We Become, was a 2023 Jewish Book Council Award Finalist. Donniel is also the host of the award-winning podcast For Heavenโ€™s Sake, together with his colleague Yossi Klein Halevi, which ranks consistently as one of the top Judaism podcasts in the world.
