This is the time of year that grizzlies meander through our place in St. Ignatius. Early this morning, we were thrilled to see this mama grizz and her two yearling cubs. She kept watch while her cubs searched for voles in our fields. After a while, the three wandered off into the thick trees along Post Creek. by @bethwaterbury

Painted a couple things to beautify the homestead while waiting for spring. The image on the wood bench (a gift from friend Larry Pecenka) is 'Preening Owl' by Inuit artist Kenojuak Ashevak. The Belted Kingfisher is in honor of the pair that nest and patrol the creek. by @bethwaterbury

I'm posting this gallery of wetland-dependent wildlife, photos I've taken over the years, to show you the beauty, biodiversity, and natural heritage we may lose due to the undermining of the Clean Water Act.

Due to the Supreme Court's disastrous Sackett v. EPA decision in 2023, tens of millions of acres of wetlands previously eligible for protection under the Clean Water Act are now at risk from development and pollution.

Raise your voice to protect our precious wetlands, waterways, and wildlife! Please consider submitting comments on the proposed rule to redefine "waters of the United States" by January 5, 2026.

Wetlands are one of the most vital and productive ecosystems on our planet, with 40% of all plant and animal species living and breeding in wetlands. They purify and recharge groundwater, reduce flood and drought risk, and store vast amounts of carbon.

Wetlands cover only 5% of the lower 48 states, less than half the acreage they covered in the 1700s. Wetlands and seasonal streams continue to disappear at an alarming rate. Let's work to reverse this trend and protect the many beneficial functions of these ecosystems. by @bethwaterbury

The other day we were visited by a huge mixed flock of Cedar and Bohemian waxwings. They came to feed on juniper berries abundant on our place. Suddenly, ~400 waxwings took to the air in a blur of wings. In their wake, a Sharp-shinned Hawk. by @bethwaterbury
