For the last five years, I've been burrowing through archives, ancestral knowledge, and the hidden, unspoken reality of how the Barbados plantation model shaped the modern world. The questions that sent me on this journey echo even louder inside of me now:

"Why de ass didn't I learn any of this growing up?"

"What are the forces, both internal and external, that held me back from this knowing?"

"What do we do now?"

Barbados and its sprawling diaspora are waking up to who we are and what happened on our soil during slavery. It is relevant to converations about race, labor, ecology and technological justice across the western hemisphere. Barbados and the wider Caribbean were the testing ground for so many intertwined fuckeries the world is confronting, so much so that the intensifying global conversation about reparations is no longer just about healing the past, but also about protecting us all — regardless of race or place — from an increasingly dystopian future. Insidious new modes of colonialism and even slavery, if you will.

I have plenty more to share, but for now, in the spirit of the las' lap this weekend that I sadly can't be on the island to enjoy, I'm offering both a provocation and an invitation:

We MUST burn Mr. Harding again.

And so, we did that just that a few months ago, in ceremony right at the end of the harvest, as our ancestors would have done centuries ago.

It is our hope that this act helps usher in a return of Harding to the national stage, and from the looks of it, he will indeed be seen and felt in many more incarnations this Crop Over season.

But what do you think?

Bajans worldwide, royal sons and daughters all, please hereby make it known: should burning Mr. Harding become a crucial part of Crop Over once more?
