🌍 How can digital payments unlock greater economic opportunities for people and businesses?

At the Financing the #SDGs Dialogue 2026 in #Madrid, the Alliance brought together representatives from governments, central banks and the private sector to explore how digital finance can drive financial inclusion and sustainable development.

💡 Five key takeaways from the discussion:

🔹 Beyond access: Financial inclusion is not just about having an account, but using financial services to improve livelihoods and financial health.

🔹 Unlocking finance for small businesses: Digital payment histories can help #MSMEs access credit and grow their businesses.

🔹 Connecting markets: Seamless cross-border payments can open new trade opportunities for African businesses.

🔹 Building trust: Consumer protection, digital infrastructure and strong partnerships are essential for inclusive and resilient financial ecosystems.

🔹 Empowering women entrepreneurs: Initiatives such as the #G7 Partnership for Women's Digital Financial Inclusion in Africa can help expand women's access to finance, markets and economic opportunities.

💬 One message to take forward: Start small, test solutions with communities and businesses, learn from experience, and scale what works!

Thank you to all our speakers and partners for an inspiring discussion.

Let's make responsible digital payments work for more people, businesses and communities!

🇿🇦 Financial inclusion: Usage is the next frontier, and trust is key.

At the South African Reserve Bank’s Biennial Conference in #Pretoria, our Managing Director, Nshuti Mbabazi, highlighted the importance of moving beyond access to financial accounts towards meaningful, sustained usage of digital payments.
Trust and usage go hand in hand: trust drives adoption, while positive experiences encourage continued use.

Nshuti emphasised that #SouthAfrica has all the ingredients to achieve 100% financial inclusion. The key is ensuring digital payments are trusted, affordable, accessible and deliver real value to people and businesses.

We look forward to strengthening our collaboration with the South African Reserve Bank, UNDP South Africa and partners to advance responsible digital payments and inclusive economic growth. by @betterthancashalliance

🇬🇭 What if farmers in rural #Ghana could enjoy the same benefits of digital payments as people in Accra or Kumasi?

This was the vision shared by Dr. Andy Osei Okrah, CEO of the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA), at last week’s workshop on digital payments in Ghana’s oil palm sector.

💬 “Under the Government’s Reset Agenda, we expect initiatives like this, and indeed this workshop, to catalyse real change within the oil palm industry and the wider tree crops sector, so that a farmer in Ofoase or Betwabedi can receive payments digitally, use those payments and enjoy the same benefits as any other Ghanaian in Accra or Kumasi.”

📲 Beyond cash, digital payments can open doors to savings, credit and greater financial opportunities for farmers and workers — with potential to expand across Ghana’s other priority tree crops, from cashew and coconut to rubber, mango and shea.

🌱 Digital wages are only half the story. What happens after tea workers and farmers receive their money?

At the Tea Association of Malawi (TAML) & Partners Conference in #Salima, we’re celebrating progress in digitizing wages across Malawi’s tea sector — and exploring how to make financial services more accessible to workers, farmers and local businesses.

💡 Four key lessons from the discussions:

🏪 Start with micro-merchants. Digital payments must work in local markets and village shops, where people spend their earnings.

💰 Make digital payments worthwhile. Affordable fees and access to savings, credit and insurance can encourage wider adoption.

♀️ Put women at the centre. Women need greater control over their income and equal opportunities to save, borrow and invest.

🧩 Build the whole ecosystem. Connectivity, phone access, financial literacy and collaboration are essential to building trust.

🌱 These encouraging results are just the beginning! We’re proud to work alongside our partners to build a more inclusive and responsible financial ecosystem for Malawi’s tea sector. by @betterthancashalliance

🇬🇭 How can digital payments help build a stronger and more inclusive financial ecosystem for Ghana’s oil palm sector?

Today in Accra, the Better Than Cash Alliance, together with the Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) and the Oil Palm Development Association of Ghana (OPDAG), is bringing together around 90 representatives — including smallholder farmers — from across the oil palm and financial sectors.

We’re back at the Africa HealthTech Summit! 🌍

Digital health isn’t only about technology — it’s also about how money moves. 💳🏥

At #AHTS2026 in Kigali, we brought together perspectives from Ethiopia, Rwanda, Africa CDC and across the health ecosystem to explore how digital payments can help build stronger, more efficient health systems.

🇪🇹 In Ethiopia:
➡️ 102+ health facilities & 750 pharmacies reached
➡️ 450,000+ citizens reached
➡️ Payments collected at pilot health facilities doubled — and in some cases, tripled
➡️ 30,000+ Health Extension Workers can now be paid in days rather than months

🎥 Watch highlights from Kigali — and stay tuned for more!

🇿🇦 🎥 From #Polokwane, #Limpopo: hear from Jesang Kiptorus of the #BetterThanCash Alliance and Namhla Mniki, Head of #ADEM, as they reflect on the challenges and priorities shared by women entrepreneurs, as more than 350 MSMEs came together just last week.

✨ Together with UNDP South Africa, Polokwane Municipality and the Women Economic Assembly, the focus was on turning those priorities into greater access to finance, markets and opportunities for growth.

💡 A key highlight: 40 entrepreneurs pitched directly to funders and development finance institutions, receiving practical feedback and opportunities for further engagement.

🎬 Meet Catherine Mukawa Gubudu, a tea farmer in #Malawi.

For years, getting paid meant worrying about where to safely keep her cash. Today, through a digital payments programme implemented by the Tea Association of Malawi, Catherine receives her tea earnings directly on her phone, giving her greater security, control and dignity.

💬 “Digital payments are helping me plan for the future. I keep goats, and I see myself increasing their number. I also hope to start raising chickens.”

Greater control over her earnings means Catherine can save, invest and plan for her family’s future with confidence.

🎬 🇪🇹 Hear the voices behind #Ethiopia’s digital health payment transformation.

At St. Peter Specialized Hospital in Addis Ababa, patients, health workers and digital payment experts share how moving from cash to digital is making payments faster and easier, while improving efficiency and transparency.

Led by Ministry of Health,Ethiopia and supported by the Alliance, the ambition is to expand digital payments across 4,600 health facilities nationwide.

The goal: a more people-centred health system and more equitable access, particularly for #women. by @betterthancashalliance
