Saturday mornings remind me what it's all about: cultivating community, and staying open to the fact (!!) that people, to one degree or another, know me. It surprises me. The thing about writing, even a caption, is that I do it solely out of selfishness; my words are for myself. MFK Fisher once answered, "I said it, I didn't write it. I said it to myself. And I just put it on paper," when speaking about her own writing, and I get it. My most honest thoughts are in conversation with myself. Which means it can be easy to forget that other people think of me as anything more than a passer-by.

How strange, how lovely, how terrifyingly vulnerable, it is to be seen.

The past month has been hard for me. It's probably boring to write about why, but it started with our beloved pitbull Bon Bon passing unexpectedly, a loss I'm still likely to be bowled over by at inopportune moments. I keep trying to find the confidence and ambition that's been burning hot for a year, but it feels like all I have left is ashes.

So it goes; the world keeps turning, the kitchen keeps calling.

Here's my haul from Sunset Ridge Farmer's Market this morning.
Ground beef, Denver steaks, and salsa: @herdonthestreet_
Sweet potato greens, salad mix, Sonoran basil, chives, and salad turnips: @armadillo_gardens
Sauerkraut: @galvan_wellness_lab

Chocolate cayenne cookies, gingerbread cookies, iced coffee: @clarkes_greens

Saturday morning. Dropped my kid off at the airport for their flight back home to Toronto, and settled in at the Flavor Corner (Nagocdoches & 410) for breakfast before @sunsetridgefarmersmarket. I'm usually a hot coffee gal, but I think vanilla is better iced, and an iced vanilla oat milk latte from @theorycoffee hit the spot. @dukesdive_satx has a slick diner breakfast plate for $11 that I wolfed down.

August in South Texas is a tough time for growing, and farmers are prepping for the bounty of autumn, so I was thrilled to see more produce options at market than the past few weeks.

@armadillo_gardens salad, Galia melon, squash, and cherry tomatoes
@bornagainfarms eggs, tajin-style pickles, sweet Italian peppers, and chicken feet for two very grateful girls
@kismet.satx sourdough, baguette, blueberry kolache, and scallion cheddar bun
@clarkes_greens leek microgreens & chocolate cayenne cookies
@herdonthestreet_ rosewood darling body butter (I *love* this stuff btw, highly recommend)
@mudnsol palo santo & patchouli car diffuser

I've been thinking about love.

Saturday night snacks after a morning at Sunset Ridge. These plates by @jeannin.marc are so appealing to me; I love the rounded sides and deep corners, the glaze on the edges and the soft cornflower blue that defines it. The cucumbers are from @armadillo_gardens, salted & topped with a bit of @galvan_wellness_lab sauerkraut (I'm obsessed with this stuff). The @kismet.satx baguette has butter & mortadella on one slice, while the other bears butter, @cloverthistleapo peach jam, and minced preserved lemon. Kalamata olives for me, and green olives with pimento for my son.

In the background: @enchantedacrestx eggs, and a spoon rest from @softlaunchart stamped MGE. by @bettertomorrowchef

Another @sunsetridgefarmersmarket Saturday 😊 I'm clinging to tomato season for as long as I can - 2 pints of assorted cherry tomatoes from @armadillo_gardens, one of grape from @clarkes_greens, and some romas & Brad's Atomic from @smallfarmersacademytx. From New vendor @cloverthistleapo I purchased tomato pepper jelly, destined for @seek_sab sandwich bread. @be.healthy.bakery is another recent addition to the market, and @kenlowery & I have loved his banana bread & sourdough chips; today we're trying his sourdough bagels.

We've been spending as much time in the yard as we can, and these @organicchix mosquito repellent incense sticks help keep that experience pleasant. We always grab a drink from @galvan_wellness_lab - his flavors are on point, and he's growing or foraging as many ingredients as possible - so this week we went ahead and bought a mason jar of each of his three flavors, to mix and match over the weekend. A gorgeous @herdonthestreet_ chuck eye steak is destined for the grill, and Chef Ted @viridian.sa is providing dessert for that meal with his brownies & chocolate chip cookies (pictured on slide 2, alongside Clarke's Greens absolutely ridiculous cayenne chocolate cookies). by @bettertomorrowchef

My Saturday morning alarm is my favorite. All week, I wake up at 5:30 for school, greeting the dawn on my way to campus; on Saturday I sleep in til the luxurious hour of 7:30am, and then it's time for @sunsetridgefarmersmarket. Over the past year, the market has become a part of my household routine. This is where we do our grocery shopping. Sunset Ridge Farmer's Market embodies what I care about in food: everything is produced locally, ethically, with respect and care for nature and sustainability. The farmers, ranchers, bakers, and vendors have love for the work, for the ingredient, and for the future - and it shows in the quality of products.

Here's last weekend's haul, and things i made with it :)

This is my second spring in San Antonio, and it feels quietly momentous: this time last year, I began to blossom. I didn't know it, as I struggled to remember how to be a student, alongside the shock of having a routine and schedule after decades of refusing to take a hard look at myself, but somewhere behind all the depression and romanticized self-destructiveness I held so dear laid the truth of me. I had -- I *have* -- a love for being alive, despite it all.

I'll write about that more, later, elsewhere; in the meanwhile, I'm soaking up the sun and nurturing my mind and body. I took this picture on the back patio of the house I still can't believe I live in (it's so cool!), as I read the latest @texasmonthly and snacked on veggies grown by my friends at @sunsetridgefarmersmarket.

We only had a couple weeks of cold, but as soon as the weather stopped being pool-friendly, my mood dove. I've lived with clinical depression for my entire life, and while I've generally felt like I had a handle on it, the person I've grown into since moving to San Antonio revealed that, no, I did not. Winter and the lack of structure from school exposed how much I was relying on outside factors to motivate myself. I've fallen back into some old shitty habits, and I've pushed them aside, and they've come back again, and I've discarded them again.

Spring is coming, though. I'm figuring out how to keep moving forward of my own volition, not in reaction. I've learned how much I like a challenge, and improving myself. Better tomorrow, Chef. Always.

Yesterday was the first pickup of my @armadillo_gardens Spring Harvest Share. I chose red beets, salad mix, cilantro & green onions. Today's lunch featured the salad, tossed with a preserved lemon vinaigrette, and the cilantro. I carved and rendered the fat from a @herdonthestreet_ pork shoulder, browned the meat in that fat, then added a homemade sauce of chiles, garlic, and cinnamon for a long, slow braise. I shredded the meat by hand and refrigerated everything overnight. With a @seek_sab tortilla and a side of mango tossed in @tableandtrellis chile lime salt, it was a plate of food worth memorializing. by @bettertomorrowchef

This weekend, in reverse. When we moved here, my husband and I vowed to be tourists in our own city, to get out of the house and live a little. San Antonio has rewarded our curiosity and dedication; there's beauty on every street, whether it's a mural or architecture or a song or someone being impossibly stylish. We can spend an entire afternoon on a single block, exploring antique shops and cafés and indie retailers, or begin wandering La Villita at dusk and end up eating fried chicken on a bench outside of Gus' as midnight approaches. San Antonio is an incredible city.

It's also an extremely impoverished city. As the government builds a ballroom larger than the White House rather than pay the military or feed the people, your neighbours are struggling and starving; now is the time for community. And that takes time, and it takes effort, but it is worth every drop of sweat (and today, there were a lot of those).

We're all in this together. by @bettertomorrowchef
