A war averted!!

On New Year’s Eve in 2019, I told Soni I wouldn’t be attending our usual New Year’s Day Mass. I wanted to go for the Cross Over service at TPH instead.

He was surprised — we had attended Mass together every year since 1983.

“I thought we would attend Mass in the morning as we always do,” he said gently. “What changed?” 🤷🏽‍♂️

“I know… but this year I want something different.” I said.
I was as cranky as my worst period days!

Then he added softly:

“Betty, I’m taking the reading in church tomorrow…”

Me-Ehen? 😒

That evening on New Year’s Eve rebellion sat firmly on my shoulders.

“What’s wrong, Betty?”

“Nothing,” I snapped.
“You know we should have discussed this earlier. It’s nearly 5 p.m., and you just spring this on me?”

He was right… but I wasn’t about to admit that. 😅

A loud Silence followed ;

Then Soni broke it with tenderness:

“Okay Betty… if I go with you to the Cross Over service at 10 p.m., will you come with me to Mass in the morning?”

He knew this was almost impossible — Cross Over at midnight, home at 1 a.m., then up again for 10 a.m. Mass — especially in a season when sleep was a battle for me. Aghhh! 😩

But deep down, I knew this wasn’t about convenience.
It was about compromise.

So I breathed and said, “Okay… deal.”

We both smiled!😊

War averted. Peace restored.
(Lord knows my sleep suffered! )

What I’ve realized is this: the enemy is always lurking around marriages, waiting for one tiny crack to slip through and create mayhem. That evening could have been one of those cracks…

The truth? “Happily” married is a daily choice.

It is choosing:
• peace over ego ✨
💛
• compromise over convenience 🤝
• connection over conflict ❤️‍🩹

Marriage thrives when 2 stubborn rams like us (Aries ♈️♈️) — keep choosing each other and avoiding clashes.

As we step into December, may we seal every crack that can give the enemy access into our homes. May we be discerning always.

May our homes be filled with peace, laughter, warmth, and grace. 🎄💖

“Marriage does not operate on entitlement.”
— Betty Irabor 💕

As we waited for my husband’s MRI, I carried a quiet weight.

Would I be able to give back what he had given me during my own downtime?

My compassion was learned through nurture; Soni’s was pure nature—“follow come,” as we say.

I soon realized I was overthinking.
My anxiety was simply having a moment.

When Soni walked into the living room downstairs in 2020 with a slightly lopsided shoulder and a worried look, a stroke was the last thing on my mind.

“Betty, I don’t feel well. My right arm…” he said.

My heart sank. Yet somehow, Soni still cracked us up.

Waiting at the health centre with family became a moment of deep reflection—fear held me tightly.

Then came the MRI results.
The hospital admission.
And the slow, steady climb: diet changes, physiotherapy, exercise, lifestyle adjustments.

At first, I thought I was operating from duty—care mode switched on because it was required of me as a wife.

Then I realized it wasn’t duty as such.
It was care born out of love I had freely received.

Duty feels like work, but love feels like pleasure—even when life changes without notice.
Still, there are moments of mental and emotional glitches—that’s simply your human side checking in.

Now imagine carrying the responsibility of care for someone who was emotionally unavailable when you needed them most.

That’s where entitlement shows up:
“After all I have done for you…”

Truth is, compassion cannot be summoned.

For me, I was simply reciprocating what Soni had given me in my own downtime—and through the many struggles of being a wife, a career woman, and a mother.

Here’s the truth:
Care,
compassion,
and kindness are not summoned in crisis.
They are learned, nurtured, and practiced daily.
They are the quiet pillars of a happy and healthy marriage.

And then, there’s grace—the grace to forgive wrongs & extend grace to our spouse despite shortcomings.
Often difficult, but not impossible.

Six years after that day in 2020, one lesson remains clear:

PRESENCE in tough times is intentional—and when nurtured daily, it becomes effortless when life starts life-ing.

If you could send a message to your older self, what would it be?

Life has a way of making us anxious about tomorrow, especially when today looks nothing like the future we imagined.

But what if the disappointments are redirecting you? What if the delays are teaching you patience? What if the season you desperately want to escape is preparing you for the very season you have been praying for?

One day, you may look back at this very moment and realise that you were becoming the woman you had always hoped to be, even when you couldn’t see it.

Your future self may be counting on the courage you find today.

If I could send a message to my older self, I would say:

Dear Older Betty,

I want you to know that I am deliberately working to make your life easier, healthier and better. I am coming to you with greater tenacity, deeper spiritual grounding, wiser choices and a more intentional approach to managing my health and wellbeing. More wrinkles, definitely, as badges of honour for the battles I have won!

I want you to reap the benefits of the lessons I am learning and, yes, still unlearning. I want you to look back and be grateful that I did not give up when life became difficult, that I took my health seriously, nurtured my relationship with God and learned to choose my battles wisely.

Little thoughts, lasting impressions.

Betty ❤️

Sometimes, God’s word comes as a gentle nudge. At other times, it is a clear instruction: You have stayed here long enough. It is time to move!
I believe I am at that point in my life where I need to turn northward. Not necessarily a change of location, but a change of direction.
Perhaps you are there too. You have circled the same mountain long enough. You have learnt the lessons, survived the storms and gathered the wisdom. Now, it is time to move forward.
The mountain has had its time. Now, it’s your time. Turn northward!
DEW DROPS — Little thoughts, lasting impressions.

Sometimes, we are so determined to hold everything together that we forget we are not superglue! Even the strongest among us have limits, and pushing beyond them can leave us stretched to breaking point.

Your mental wellbeing matters. You do not have to apologise for being human. ❤️

As you return to your Creator today, Sir Olu Jacobs, the Lion of Lufodo, we pray that eternal peace and rest be upon your soul.

You came, you lived, you gave, and you left behind not just a remarkable legacy, but an unforgettable imprint on all of us who had the privilege of knowing and loving you.

This picture, taken at my 60th birthday celebration, is a beautiful reminder of your jovial, warm and fun-loving spirit. That smile, that energy, that unmistakable Olu Jacobs presence — memories we will forever cherish.

And don’t worry, your beautiful wife is not alone. There is a whole community standing with her, surrounding her with love and strength. Your darling sons, Olusoji and Olugbenga, have also shown great courage and strength, standing firmly beside their mother through this difficult time.

Thank you, Sir, for the memories, the laughter, the artistry and the legacy.

Rest well, Sir Olu Jacobs.
You have earned your rest.

My heart is overflowing with gratitude for my Light Bearers, my family, friends and community. ❤️

You have shown me what it truly means to show up: to check in, stand close, and remind me that I am never alone.

If I start calling names, Instagram may run out of space! So let me simply say: THANK YOU.

To everyone who has supported me in ways big and small, God bless you richly. Thank you for both your presence and presents. ❤️

May the love and care you have shown me return to you a hundredfold.

Her name is Elizabeth Mojisola Hunponu Wusu. She is Madam President at Woodhall Capital, a nomenclature befitting a woman at the helm of a multifaceted business empire spanning finance, the creative sector and CSR.

Glad to have sat down with her over lunch, exchanging thoughts on business, leadership, creativity and the many possibilities that lie ahead.

THE WEBINAR I NEVER KNEW I NEEDED!!

Eight days after my mum passed, I went live to host the final session of our Coming Up for Air webinar on May 1st.

Announcing her passing calmly, with dry eyes, as we prepared to wrap up the session, was nothing short of grace. The grace to hold it together. The grace not to fall apart.

I had debated whether to postpone the webinar or simply go ahead so I could fully focus on the rites of passage ahead. In the end, I chose to continue.

Afterwards, I received messages saying:
“You’re so strong.”
“You held it down so well.”
“I would have been a wreck through a 3-hour webinar.”

But sometimes, as leaders, we do what we must do with courage, even when our hearts are heavy.

The beautiful thing is that the webinar itself became a gift, perhaps the exact gift I needed in that moment. With over 150 participants and four dynamic speakers, the session left me deeply impacted and profoundly grateful.

Thank you to these incredible voices:
@udo_okonjo
@taradurotoye
@stephbusari
@chudeity

Ironically, while choosing the webinar theme — Finding Clarity, I had no idea how much I would personally need that conversation to navigate the emotions and uncertainty surrounding my mother’s passing.

As it turned out, it was a session I didn’t know I needed.

And somehow, through grief I found clarity.
