As a Brazilian who immigrated to Ireland with very basic English, this script got me from start to finish.
It portrays that early stage with so much truth: the anxiety of not being able to express yourself, the loneliness, the homesickness, that inexplicable emptiness only those who’ve been through it know.
And it also celebrates the small wins that turn into huge pride.
It’s about immigrating, finding yourself, and how some connections go beyond any language barrier. by @betweenwordsfilm

I never thought I would write a film about language. Actually, I think I wrote it because of everything I couldn’t say. When I moved from Brazil to Ireland, I thought learning English would be the hardest part. It wasn’t. The hardest part was feeling like I wasn’t myself anymore. In Portuguese I know who I am. I joke. I speak fast. I tell stories. I don’t think before talking. In English, sometimes I stop. I look for the right word. Sometimes I know exactly what I want to say, but I just can’t find the words. It can be frustrating. That’s where Between Words came from. by @betweenwordsfilm

“When I first read Between Words, what struck me was how much of the story lives in the unspoken. So much of it happens in glances, silences, and the space between people, which is exactly the kind of storytelling I’m drawn to as a cinematographer.
From the first read I could already picture the film. It gives me the chance to build a distinctive visual language I’ve wanted to explore for a long time, something cinematic and nostalgic that leans on mood, light, and atmosphere rather than exposition.
