Kinda been keeping this under wraps cause I haven’t really known how it would turn out, but I started building a fretless tackhead banjo back in June, and today I got it strung up and tuned! Forgive the shoddy banjo playing, it’s my first time holding a fretless one. I don’t think I have an excuse for the weird banjo face though..

The hoop is a black walnut nonagon and the neck is Korina, with an Ebony fretboard. I stained the goat hide for the head with some Planet Bean coffee, which I’ve drank more than my fair share of, so being able to use some to build an instrument felt really cool. I found inspiration from the tradition of Appalachian instrument makers, with some guidance from the Foxfire 3 book that includes firsthand accounts of conversations with instrument builders from Appalachia. Measurements were stolen from my Alabama banjo that I got at Guelph Music. I’ve also gotta thank Tom @bartlettguitars for the invaluable mentorship and encouragement! It’s a pretty imperfect instrument, and I’m still working out the kinks in the setup, but I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished nonetheless. This is the first thing I’ve ever really fully built myself, and it feels pretty cool! Hope you guys like it 🫡🫡 taken in Mountains by @bevchcat
