West Without A Word (2008) - link in bio. West Without A Word was the brainchild of Jeff. Around August 2007, he began to make inroads with The Silent Ballet, a prominent post-rock, ambient, and electronic music e-zine started in 2006. Through 2012, it served as a springboard for many new underground acts in our scene (including us) and, at the time, they were interested in pulling a showcase together for west coast instrumental/post-rock bands. Through the power of Myspace, Jeff assembled a killer line up for two nights of music. Supporting our efforts were two amazing venues (long since gone): The Pehrspace and 2nd Street Jazz (The Cocaine). They were the alternative to the pay-to-play juggernauts up the Sunset Strip, and served as beacons for independent music in the city. Steve put his graphic design skills to the task of creating a poster for the show. Morgan and Adam ran around with camcorders like idiots trying to capture the weekend for posterity. While beginning the process of editing "Live in West Hollywood" in 2020, Morgan rediscovered the DV tapes from that weekend in 2008. Between then and now, the DV tapes, the camcorder, and the laptop needed to rip the footage had all degraded significantly. With some patience, he was able to assemble bits and pieces together to make a short film about that epic weekend. Like the event itself, this little film is a bit rough around the edges, but the footage captures not only a snapshot of the "second wave" of post-rock in the US around that time, but also the DIY aesthetic that was pervasive through our music community. Live music has been shaken to its core because of Covid-19. For the past year, most musicians and music venues have been silenced, and the path to recovery is unclear. "West Without A Word" proposes one way back. Through community, creativity, and heart, a scene can be (re)built from almost nothing. For the sake of independent music: embrace the hard work to create the scene you want to see in you own city or town. Make it better than it was before. Until then, stay safe. We're thrilled to announce the release of Live in West Hollywood, available now on YouTube (link in bio) https://youtu.be/WKZauwiZJ-Y Live in West Hollywood was filmed at the iconic Troubadour rock club on January 14, 2016 during Beware of Safety's ten-year anniversary show with longtime friends Caspian. In November 2020, Beware of Safety's drummer Morgan Hendry revisited the footage captured at that performance and began the process of pulling together what you see here. Matt Wilkinson and Tad Piecka (Beware of Safety's bassist) stepped in to mix and master the audio, which was finally able to capture the live sound of Beware of Safety that had eluded the band in the recording studio. In the five years since this concert, an incredible amount has happened in the band's personal lives, and in the world. That said, we never could have imagined 2020. A nation fractured seemingly beyond repair; the world immobilized by a global pandemic. Beyond the feelings of nostalgia sparked by Live in West Hollywood, we were struck by a sort of discomfort. The sight of a room full of people standing safely together in a shared, positive experience has never seemed so far away, and yet so vital. We hope this film serves as a reminder that these things were once possible, that they were wonderful, and that we should strengthen our resolve to make them a reality again. Please wear a mask, stay physically distant from but emotionally close to each other, and support the artists you love in any ways you can. We can get through this together.
