Dearest Hendrix,

This is how mommy wants to remember you - smiling and surrounded by flowers. You were always such a happy boy.

There is a deep sadness that lives in my chest these days, even when I seem outwardly okay.

One thing that I’ve learned though, from the extraordinary amount of grief I’ve been faced with over the last 4 years is this: profound grief is a by-product of profound love. It is the cost of it.

Loving and being loved by Hendrix is worth that price, even when the hurt feels crippling.

Meet your new favorite Halloween cocktail - the blackberry margarita smash from @anothercocktailblog ✨

I make this every year and sometimes even have it as a mocktail with a little extra lime juice.

You can keep things super simple and serve it with a sugar rim (I mixed in some edible glitter in this video) and a sprig of sage, or get even spookier and make lychee-blueberry eyeballs to float in it.

I’m back again with my pumpkin treat mold, because in this economy we need to get as much use as possible out of what we buy. Am I right?

This time I made pancakes with spiced maple syrup and raspberry preserves. These were quick and easy to make and made enough for Vick and I to have leftovers.

You can use any pancake mix, but I love this protein one from @krusteaz because it’s simple, tasty, and has added protein.

I’ve heard you don’t need to grease silicone molds, but I used a little butter on the pumpkin molds, and brushed some olive oil on the skull molds because I did want those to brown nicely.

Bake time on these will vary, depending on what mold you use and how full you fill them. I checked mine with a toothpick at the 7-8 minute mark and adjusted as necessary. I baked them at 400 degrees F.

For the spiced maple syrup, I wanted something with chai flavors so I used cinnamon, star anise, peppercorns, fresh ginger, cardamom, and a pinch of pumpkin pie spice. You want to bring the syrup to a gentle simmer and let it cook for about 5 minutes, then strain.

I got my skull treat mold from Amazon and my pumpkin treat mold from @michaelsstores 🎃 Michael’s currently has all of their Halloween items on sale, and if you are a veteran, you get an additional discount, which we love (Vick is a Marine).

Next time, I’m going to add a little cinnamon and some wild blueberries in the batter.

✨October magic✨ There’s something about this month that breathes life into me.

I’m a sucker for tradition, and love incorporating things from my family into my daily life - especially things that belong to my mother.

Something about spooky season amplifies this desire. October makes me want to connect to the women in my family and my inner circle in deeper ways.

This opera cape was my grandmother’s, passed down to my mom. I love wearing it and imagining the occasions either of them would have put it on. I love the faint scent of my mom that lingers on it.

And it may be odd, but I love saying their names out loud as it drapes my shoulders - Reba, Reneé, and now…..me.

Happy 2nd wedding anniversary to my dearest, darling husband.

This second year of marriage really dug deep and showed us what we are made of. It showed us areas we needed to adapt, evolve, and revealed ways to help us love each other better.

Thank you for meeting every challenge with determination and love. Thank you for showing up through the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Thank you for being a best friend, confidant, and one sexy ass man that I’m proud to call mine.

I think this may be my favorite Halloween DIY so far this year. It’s so incredibly simple, yet packs so much nostalgic Halloween cuteness.

I picked up a lamp (and ditched the shade), a pumpkin pail, and a witch’s hat from my local Goodwill. I spray painted the lamp base black with some spray paint I had on hand.

Using paint from other projects, I added some details to the pumpkin pail to make it look more retro.

Then I cut a hole in the base of the pail, slid it onto the lamp base, and used a little hot glue to secure it. I tied a bow around the lamp base (lucky for me I had that striped ribbon from last year), and then hot glued the witch’s hat to the pail.

The lamp idea came from the very talented @itseverydayryan and the vintage style pumpkin pail idea is from Katelynn Lowery (on Facebook, I don’t think she has an IG).

This is such a fun, versatile, and inexpensive way to bring so much Halloween goodness to your space. Plus, the soft, orange glow at night is such a vibe. 🥰

I could be wrong, but I think that food somehow tastes better when it’s shaped like a pumpkin. These mini jack-o-lantern treat molds from @michaelsstores were on sale for $7 so I had to take one home with me.

There are so many uses I’ve already thought of (hello pumpkin shaped cornbread), but I think my next use will definitely be jack-o-lantern pancakes for a fun twist on breakfast.

These apple cider mini cakes, brushed with brown butter, and rolled in cinnamon sugar were pretty delicious.

I have a ton of ideas of my own, but I’m so curious - what would you use these for?

When I saw these cute little Halloween boxes at @dollartree I knew they would make the perfect snack box for a scary movie night in our home theatre.

Vick and I recently had a conversation about little things from our childhood that we loved and those little wax drink bottles came up.

We’ve been really trying to lean into catering to our inner children (is that the plural of inner child 🤔) so I thought filling the snack box with nostalgic treats from our childhood would be so fun. I found all the snacks I needed at @fivebelow for a great price.

Needless to say, Vick loved it. The movie was horrible, but the snacks & the company more than made up for it.

These boxes would also be fun for a little impromptu picnic with your sweetheart, your bestie, or yourself, to soak up all the gorgeous Fall weather.
