POSTS STORIES REELS

"Because I want you to be proud of me"

I needed a role model like Picard in my life as a child. Picard. served as an alternative to my experiences – a man who was gentle and tender, worked toward diplomacy over violence, for justice, humbled by the expertise of those around him, and an explorer in awe of the Universe.

Wesley was my stand in - perhaps for all of us – as we saw his relationship with Picard develop, filling the role of a father who was now gone (or absent or unrelateable). That relationship formed a foundation of who I am. I wanted Picard – and by extension Star Trek itself – to be proud of what I had done and who I was.

As my own activist work matured, I noted all of Sir Patrick Stewart's real-world efforts for social change. His advocacy of women's rights and safety, for the LGBTQ+ community, and now for Alzheimer's research. I am also continually inspired by the work of the wider Star Trek community that I've come to know – in the spirit of the Enterprise and now the wider fleet of ships and stories represented by a larger cast and crew – all people who have evolved from parental figures to now colleagues on a mission with us together.

Perhaps as one ages, the craving for pride evolves to an intent of purpose – because we truly believe in the mission of peace, democracy, justice, and wonder. But that child-like motivation “I wanted you to be proud of me” is the seed. I've lost two mentors of my childhood now. My grandfather who gave me my first view of the stars through his telescope and spoke to me of the importance of bees and fungi. And Sir Patrick Stewart, whom tho I hadn't met, brought to life a character - and championed causes - that should we follow would help make the world the utopia we envision in Star Trek. And I hope that in, whatever form it takes, they would be proud of the work that I, and WE, are all doing now. Should we all be so fortunate to have such humans in our lives – fictional and real - to aspire to. -Matthew

@sirpatstew asked for donations toward Alzheimer's research, links in his bio. And campaign on @trekgeeks as well.

Hey Vancouver! Great work on smashing those early voting records. Now let's make alphabet soup. 🗳

Milky Way in Nevada near Area 51 on the "Extraterrestrial Highway" 👽 We're located about 30k lightyears from the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy. The intensity of the Milky Way on the horizon is our view toward the "downtown" of the Galaxy where stars are more densely concentrated appearing to glow together. The dark lanes in the Milky Way are vast clouds of dust and gas that can eventually form new stars.
20mm - F1.8 - 20 second single exposure.

Just found this great shot talking about #space during "Cosmic Nights" at @spacecentreyvr

An evening exploring the beginnings of everything.
Last night’s Cosmic Nights: Origins – Birth of the Universe at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre took us on a fascinating journey through the cosmos.
From Matthew Cimone’s live demonstration exploring Nancy Grace Roman’s legacy and the telescope bearing her name, to Dark Universe, narrated by Neil deGrasse Tyson, and David McKeen’s lecture on the first two weeks of the universe, there was plenty to spark curiosity and conversation.
So much we have discovered, and so much still to understand. A great reminder to keep asking questions and looking up.

NEW EPISODE!
We are joined by the SyFy Sistas who just launched the new round of the SyFy Sistas Legacy Fund!

The Sistas have been a huge inspiration and a direct catalyst of our podcast. In this episode Tamia Harper, Yvette Blackmon Tom, and Fran Taylor talk about the origin of the Sistas, their mission to highlight Black Creators, create a safe space for people of colour in the fandom, and of course the late Sista Subrina Wood honoured by the SyFy Sistas Legacy Fund. AND we are joined by past guest of the show now turned guest host Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein.

To support the Legacy Fund, and find some really cool swag, check out the official SyFy Sistas Store at the link below. Sales go directly to the Legacy Fund which itself supports social causes being undertaken by members of the fandom.

Lightning storm in front of constellation Scorpius at my grandfather's cottage on Shebandowan Lake in Northwestern Ontario - circa 2015. Another photo revisit, I could never get it to look right but this is the best I've done with it.
I've always wanted to get a bolt of lightning with a starfield. In this case, lightning was illuminating the clouds in the foreground. The red star in the image is the Red Supergiant Antares. At a distance of 500 light years, Antares is 800 times the radius of our Sun and nearing the end of its stellar life. Placed at the centre of our solar system, Antares would reach out to the orbit of Jupiter.
Like Betelgeuse in Orion, Antares could go supernova tomorrow, or in the coming millennia putting on an incredible lightshow. Either of these stars would create a bright orb in the sky. Unlike diffuse Moonlight, the supernova would be a bright pinpoint light source casting shadows with defined edges. It may possibly be bright enough to allow your eye to see the colour of objects at night beyond the silver grey of moonlight.

Revisiting some older photos with new editing tools/skills. This is a photo of a rare aurora in #Vancouver circa 2015 from the roof of a dorm building at @simonfraseru
The various colours are indicative of the excitement of different elements in the atmosphere. The green of aurora is oxygen which is the most common during aurora. During more intense storms, Nitrogen can also become excited giving off purple and blue aurora as well.
