Delighted to be included in the fabulous @vesselsandsticks group show next month ‘WHAT HOLDS’ - all about the lidded vessel- with themes around containment, storage (both mythical and practical) , magic , secrecy, safety, protection, revelation, anticipation I found the inspired and intriguing brief irresistible despite being away and only having phone photos to enter with! Little Eyemouth lidded vessel will be launched, like so many Scots, on her emigration to Canada shortly! #eyemouthclay #Scottishclay #scotlandcoast #handbuiltceramics #liddedvessel #vesselsandsticks #bexeramic #Eyemouth by @bexeramic

Two vessels made with Orkney clay & seawater and including found objects from Birsay bay collected during my residency last year. Presented here in the form of a photographic monochrome diptych entitled "Boreas Domus, Mare Amicus" which happens to be the Orkney Islands motto (The North our home, The Sea our friend) Delighted to have this featured alongside many other extraordinary artists (both Orcadian and others) In the intriguing 'Days Between Weathers' An exhibition in book form by Dr Scott Mason. DM for further details! #daysbetweenweathers #birsay #birsaybay #linkshouse #pierartscentre #orkneyclay #orkneyartistsresidency #orkneyresidency #bexeramic #orkneyclay #handbuiltceramics #thalassophile #oceanic #littoral #intertidal taken in Birsay, Orkney, United Kingdom by @bexeramic

Today I was hosted by the splendidly generous Nicky @harraypotterorkney what a fantastic blether we had! I’ve not wedged grog into this much super smooth clay for some time my hands are now insanely smooth!! I’ve been making saggars for future firings but some of this is going to become spindle whorls in a workshop elsewhere in Orkney.. by @bexeramic

Where the burn meets the sea… might become something…. This is no threshold; A liminal mergepoint between sweet and salt. A neither nor- no longer separable. Burnsea. Peaty burn, algaeceous sea Rushing furiously, enveloping wildly, mixing impossibly. by @bexeramic

Details of the pit fired Birsayware. Ware refers both to ceramic pieces and seaweed that grows below the low water mark traditionally used for various agricultural and chemical applications…. Like many subsistence critters in Orkney mine were involved in the Kelp industry at one time listed as Kelp Farmers . The landlords made money from the Kelp but it took a lot of labour which meant folk couldn’t also keep on top of their croft work and this lead to hunger and sickness… by @bexeramic

Last time I was here I did a fast pit firing of some prices using Raku clay and partly using dried tangle as fuel (thank you kelp farming ancestors!) as well as seaweed/ sand and shells to make indentations in the clay when it was still leatherhard. Some things blew (lack of drying time) but I rather like the holes showing windows to the interior- The plaques all survived.. more to follow …. by @bexeramic

Seaplaques in Situ…. A large part of these works is their physical journey with me from collecting materials on the shore in Orkney, travelling back to London, to the studio, and returning back here again. The pieces thus repeat the ancestral migration patterns that brought me into here and now. The configuration and reconfiguration of their positions in the sand, their relatedness to each other, generations and the landscape. It’s good to be back and moving forward. Back on the Brough … working on the causeway - probably the most magical of all pathways given it’s capacity for appearing and disappearing with the tides, guiding folk to cross from mainland to island and back again (if they pay attention..) In this case it also facilitates travel from present to past too as the Brough houses Pictish, early Christian and Viking remains as well as a Stevenson Lighthouse protecting mariners and fishers from the rocks below for 100 years. I have been Installing some of my small ceramic Finfolk coins made from local materials following the residency I did at #linkshouse way back in 2023. They mark a threshold in the crossing…. #bexeramic #ceramicinstallation #broughofbirsay #ceramicartist by @bexeramic

By mid August I was back in the countryside observing the effects of the drought on the land. These cracks get worse every year- they always make me think of what I call ‘healing’ when making ceramic work- when cracking appears in clay what does it tell me and what do I do? I noticed a few feathers had fallen into the cracks (see Substack post) - a numinous happenstance - and began gathering and placing feathers in the many cracks, thinking about the phrase “spitting feathers” in English which means either/both thirsty and/or angry. Before I left for Orkney I spent some time attempting and failing to heal one of these cracks. Bringing it water and molding it back together with my hands. I felt the peace of hands in clay, the futility of the task and the hope of healing all at once. I’ll be returning to this work next summer to see how it evolves .. #bexeramic #ukdrought #crackedearth #healtheland listentothelandspeak Photos of me by Scott Mason by @bexeramic
