David Goggins’ body tells the story of decades spent pushing far beyond what most people would consider their limit. 🥶

Stress fractures. Severe shin splints. Knee problems. Destroyed feet. Surgeries. Countless miles accumulated through pain, exhaustion and brutal conditions.

From weighing nearly 300 lbs before becoming a Navy SEAL to running ultramarathons, completing some of the hardest endurance events on the planet and breaking the 24-hour pull-up world record, Goggins has put his body through an almost unimaginable amount of punishment.

Some of those injuries became permanent reminders of just how far he was willing to go.

But that’s also an important part of his story: Goggins never claimed the path was healthy or comfortable. He wanted to discover how much he was capable of enduring.

The scars are basically a map of the journey.

Stay hard.

Israel Adesanya is a two-time UFC middleweight champion. David Goggins still managed to push him to a place he wasn’t used to going.

In 2025, Adesanya linked up with Goggins for a brutal endurance training session built around running, suffering, and refusing to quit when the body starts asking for an exit.

For Izzy, this wasn’t about learning how to fight. He had already spent years competing against the best fighters on the planet.

It was about entering Goggins’ world.

Long miles. Exhaustion. Discomfort. No crowd. No belt on the line. Just the question of how much you’re willing to keep giving when every part of you wants to stop.

Goggins summed up the difference perfectly:

“Where your world ends, mine begins.”

Adesanya went there specifically looking for something difficult.

“I wanted pain. I got pain.”

Two completely different athletes, two completely different disciplines — but the same obsession with finding out what happens when you keep going past the point where most people stop.

In 2008, David Goggins didn’t just arrive at the Ironman World Championship like everyone else. He parachuted into the ocean shortly before the start — then went on to complete the entire 140.6-mile race.

Goggins is a former Navy SEAL and endurance athlete who built his reputation by deliberately putting himself through some of the hardest physical challenges possible. Before the books, speeches and worldwide recognition, he was already competing in ultramarathons, triathlons and extreme endurance events.

After the parachute jump in Kona, the real challenge was only beginning: a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a full 26.2-mile marathon.

He finished the Ironman in approximately 11 hours and 24 minutes.

For most people, completing an Ironman is the challenge.

For Goggins, apparently that wasn’t enough.

David Goggins is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL, ultra-endurance athlete, author, and one of the most recognized figures in the world of mental toughness.

After struggling with obesity, poverty, and a difficult childhood, he completely transformed his life and went on to complete some of the hardest military training and endurance events in the world. He has competed in ultramarathons, Ironman triathlons, and other extreme endurance challenges, often pushing far beyond what most people consider possible.

Through his books Can’t Hurt Me and Never Finished, Goggins became known for his philosophy of discipline, accountability, and deliberately doing difficult things to build a stronger mind.

His message is simple: your perceived limits are often much further away than you think.

Badwater 135 is not a normal ultramarathon.

It’s 135 miles — 217 km — through California’s Death Valley, one of the hottest environments on Earth, before finishing high in the mountains at Whitney Portal.

Temperatures can climb above 50°C. The road radiates heat back at the runners. There’s almost nowhere to hide.

And David Goggins showed up wearing black shorts.

For hours, he ran through an environment designed to make the human body stop — fighting dehydration, exhaustion, destroyed legs and the constant urge to quit.

Badwater isn’t just about being fit.

It’s about finding out what’s left when comfort, energy and motivation are gone.

That’s exactly why Goggins wanted to be there.

At 50 years old, David Goggins returned to the Moab 240 — one of the most brutal ultramarathons on Earth — and covered roughly 240 miles through the Utah desert and mountains in 84 hours, 57 minutes, finishing 21st overall.

What makes it even crazier: just two months earlier, he had finished the Bigfoot 200 in 66 hours. That’s more than 440 miles of racing across two 200+ mile ultras at age 50.

Five years after finishing 2nd at Moab in 2020, Goggins came back at 50 and proved he was still capable of operating in a world of endurance almost nobody will ever experience.

David Goggins has spent decades training one thing most people avoid: staying calm while everything hurts.

In this session, he turns a simple wall sit into a lesson in pain tolerance — barely reacting while the person beside him is fighting to hold the position.

And this isn’t even the craziest version he’s done.

Goggins has performed wall sits with 450 lb (204 kg) loaded across his legs, turning an already brutal isometric exercise into something almost absurd.

That’s the difference between being physically strong and being deeply conditioned to discomfort.

The pain is still there. He’s just trained himself not to negotiate with it.

Badwater 135 isn’t a normal ultramarathon.

It’s 135 miles (217 km) nonstop through Death Valley, starting at Badwater Basin — 85 meters below sea level — and finishing high at Whitney Portal. Along the way, runners cross three mountain ranges and climb roughly 4,450 meters (14,600 ft), all while dealing with the brutal summer heat of one of the hottest places on Earth.

David Goggins ran his first Badwater 135 in 2006 at age 31. He finished 5th overall in 30 hours, 18 minutes and 54 seconds.

Then he came back in 2007 and got even better — 3rd overall in 25:49:40, cutting more than four hours from his previous time. He would eventually record three official Badwater 135 finishes, including another finish in 2013.

217 kilometers through Death Valley. Three mountain ranges. More than a day on your feet. That’s Badwater 135.

In 2013, David Goggins broke the Guinness World Record for most pull-ups in 24 hours, completing 4,030 pull-ups in roughly 17 hours. It was his third attempt at the record.

But there was another detail that makes the attempt even more insane.

For essentially the entire 17 hours, Goggins says he listened to “Going the Distance” by Bill Conti, from the original Rocky soundtrack, on repeat.

The song was tied to one specific scene from Rocky: round 14, when Rocky has been beaten down by Apollo Creed and everyone expects him to stay down — but he gets back to his feet.

Goggins has explained that he had watched that scene thousands of times growing up. During the pull-up record, he used it as a visualization: not necessarily being the man who wins, but being the man who refuses to stay down.

4,030 pull-ups. 17 hours. One song. Over and over again.

Israel Adesanya is one of the best-conditioned fighters on the planet.

But training with David Goggins is a completely different type of endurance.

Izzy starts feeling the pace early, while Goggins looks like he’s barely getting started.

That’s what makes Goggins’ engine so ridiculous. Decades of ultra-endurance training have conditioned him to keep working when most people — even elite athletes — are already deep into fatigue.

Different sports require different kinds of conditioning, of course. Izzy is built to explode, react, strike and recover through championship-level MMA rounds.

Goggins built himself for something else entirely:

To suffer for hours and just keep going.

His endurance is genuinely on another level.
