Vegan actor James Cromwell says, ā€œDon’t buy cage-free eggs.ā€

Cromwell appears in a new video for @peta, in which he debunks the cage-free ā€œlieā€ and encourages people to eat vegan eggs instead.

Cromwell, an activist and advocate for social justice, the environment, and animals, has said that he decided to go vegan on the second day of filming 1995’s Babe.

If organic free-range models need more chickens for the same number of eggs produced, is cage-free really the solution?

According to The Guardian, switching the UK’s entire egg production to organic free-range farming would generate 2.316 million tonnes of COā‚‚e, compared with 1.184 million tonnes under a fully caged system.

So, is cage-free better for animals and the climate? Or is it time to move beyond cage-free and transition to plant-based alternatives altogether?

What does freedom mean when your entire life is controlled by an industry that breeds you to produce, pushes your body beyond its limits, and kills you when you are no longer profitable?

Behind the label are millions of individual lives. Hens who never meet their mothers. Chicks whose beaks are mutilated. Birds forced to live among thousands of others in crowded barns, vulnerable to painful bone fractures, aggression, respiratory infections and suffocation.

A life with more room to suffer is not the same as a life free from exploitation.
And the question cannot end with how we house the billions of hens already trapped in this system. We must also ask why we continue breeding more lives into it, building infrastructure that sustains animal production for years, and investing in a future that depends on their exploitation.

Beyond Cage-Free Open Letter calls for a deeper shift in how we measure progress: not only by how many animals are moved out of cages, but by how many are spared from being bred into the food system in the first place. It calls for a transition toward plant-based food systems that addresses animal suffering alongside climate change, biodiversity loss, public health and food security.
Because true progress cannot mean making exploitation more acceptable. It must mean building a future that needs less of it.
She was never a product. She was a life.

Many people believe that eating eggs is ethical because hens are cared for and not caused harm.

But nothing could be further from the truth.

There simply is no ethical way to use and commodify another sentient being.

The egg carton says ā€œcage-freeā€.
No individual cages. That part is true.
But freedom isn’t measured by the absence of bars.

People asked for better lives for hens.
The industry offered a different label.

The animal exploitation didn’t disappear.
It was rebranded.

A cage does not become freedom just because its walls move further away.

We have become very good at finding softer words for suffering. ā€œMore space.ā€ ā€œBetter welfare.ā€ ā€œCage-free.ā€ Words that can make a system feel kinder without asking the hardest question: why does her body have to belong to us at all?

A hen does not know the language of welfare labels. She knows the ground beneath her feet. She knows fear. She knows pain. She knows the body of another hen lying beside her. She knows when her own body is exhausted.

And still, we reduce her life to what she can produce.

Maybe the real measure of progress is not how much more comfortably we can use an animal. Maybe it is whether we can imagine a world where we no longer need to use her at all.

Because giving someone more room inside exploitation is not freedom. It is simply making exploitation easier to accept.

Her life should not have to become more comfortable for us to feel comfortable taking it.

🧔 Dar luz en la oscuridad.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

When you hear ā€œcage-freeā€, ā€œfree-rangeā€ or ā€œorganicā€, what do you picture?
Perhaps hens roaming freely outdoors, with space to move, dust-bathe and live as they naturally would.

But these labels don’t tell the whole story.

ā€œCage-freeā€ does not mean cruelty-free. ā€œFree-rangeā€ does not mean freedom. And ā€œorganicā€ does not mean that animals are free from exploitation.

Millions of hens are still bred to produce eggs, confined in intensive systems and ultimately killed when their productivity declines.
We need to look beyond the labels and beyond welfare reforms.

Animals need more than slightly different conditions of exploitation. They need a future beyond animal agriculture.

What does ā€œbetterā€ mean when it comes to eggs?

ā€œCage-freeā€, ā€œfree-rangeā€ and ā€œhigher welfareā€ labels may sound like progress. But they don’t change the fundamental environmental costs of producing eggs.

Just one dozen eggs can have a water footprint of around 636 gallons, equivalent to 40 showers. Plant-based egg alternatives can use 98% less water. 🌱

Beyond Cage-Free challenges us to look beyond welfare labels and ask a bigger question: what if the solution isn’t changing how we exploit animals, but moving beyond animal agriculture altogether?

A truly sustainable food system can reduce pressure on water, land and other planetary resources while leaving animals out of the equation.
Go beyond cage-free. Go beyond animal agriculture.
