When you’re worried someone you love may be struggling with an eating disorder, finding the right words isn’t easy. But avoiding the conversation isn’t the answer either.

Here are a few ways to start:

• “I’ve noticed some changes lately, and I wanted to check in. How are you really doing?”

• “You seem more anxious around food than you used to be. Is something going on?”

• “I’ve noticed you’ve been skipping things we used to enjoy together, especially when food is involved.”

• “I know this might be uncomfortable to talk about, but I care about you too much to ignore what I’m noticing.”

• “You don’t have to talk about it right now, but I’m here when you’re ready.”

Remember, your job isn’t to diagnose, confront or fix someone. It’s to let them know they’re seen, loved and supported.

Save this post. You never know when you might need these words.

A lapse is a single slip or a brief return of eating disorder symptoms that a person can contain with self-awareness and support.

A relapse is a sustained return to eating disorder behaviors, and it calls for a step up in care. The distinction matters clinically: a lapse addressed early is far less likely to become a relapse.

A lapse does not erase all the progress you’ve made. It just means we need a reset and I’ve been there so before you cast shame on yourself…let’s work on ways to resist the urge in the future and lean on a new support system with a new set of coping skills.

How does that sound, friend?

Pick one weekly challenge and work on that.
Not 5. Just 1.

Do the same the next week.
It’s called “the layer effect.”

That’s how recovery works. One day at a time. One behavior disruption. One win.

I’ll help you.

You don’t need to be ready for recovery. You just have to take the first step. 🩷❤️

It’s the space between the thought and the urge. Learning to disobey it is recovery. 🩷

Sylvester Stallone’s decision to talk publicly about his experience with bulimia is incredibly powerful.

Not because he is famous.

But because his story challenges one of the biggest misconceptions about eating disorders: that they primarily affect women.

They don’t.

About 1 in 3 people struggling with an eating disorder is male, and an estimated 6.6 million men in the U.S. will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime.

And yet men are still significantly underdiagnosed and undertreated.

Sometimes the eating disorder doesn’t look like wanting to be smaller. Sometimes it looks like wanting to be more muscular, more defined, more disciplined, more “fit.”

It can hide behind six days a week at the gym.
It can hide behind rigid food rules.
It can hide behind “I just want to optimize my body.”
It can hide behind compliments.

And because these behaviors can be praised in men, the problem can go unnoticed for years.

You don’t have to look sick to be sick. You don’t have to be underweight. And you don’t have to fit the stereotype of what an eating disorder is supposed to look like.

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that can affect anyone. Men deserve to see themselves in this conversation, too.

And if Stallone’s story helps even one man recognize something in himself and ask for help, that matters.

This conversation is long overdue.
