“It can’t be good… right?”

When I first heard a Death Note Musical was coming to London I knew I had to see it.
Having seen Death Note adapted poorly in the past, I went in to the final night of its 2026 run at the @barbicancentre with low expectations but what I was met with was a genuinely beautiful piece of art.

“Will he take a chip? Will he eat it?!”

@deathnotethemusical avoids leaning into the often meme’d aspects of the anime in favour of presenting this world with sincerity. It maintains humour while still posing the philosophical question “what is real justice?”.

The performances were outstanding and as much as I missed Ryuks wings, I wouldn’t trade them for how (ironically) animated @tellyleung made him feel. @xander._ / @colin_ryan / @shtephie did a wonderful job bringing the main trio to life. @gracemouat ‘s REM also stood out to me.

For me tho the production was the standout aspect. What they did with such a limited space was incredibly impressive. Despite the stages size the production never felt small. A hanging walkway divides the Gods from the Earth, rooms move in and out within a moment & the costumes were gorgeous.

This isn’t an ad either, whether you’re a Death Note fan or not, I genuinely recommend checking the show out when it returns to London in 2027.
