Hot take: your reluctant reader does not need to finish every book they start. 📚
Forcing a book they’re not into teaches them reading is a chore. What they need first is a win, a book that actually grabs them.
So let them bail on the boring ones. Then help them find the right one. That’s exactly where I start in the Reluctant Reader Reset (link in bio).
Save this for the next time you’re tempted to say “just finish it.”

One thing I wish more parents knew: you do not need hours. You need a habit.

One book a day before kindergarten adds up to hundreds of thousands of words. Twenty minutes a day adds up to about a million words a year by 5th grade. And don’t stop when they can read on their own. Most kids say they love being read to, and the ones who wish it hadn’t stopped say it was special time with you.

Small, steady, cozy reading time is doing more than you think. 📚💛

Save this for the nights you wonder if it matters. It does.

This is what Banned Books Week is actually about. Keep reading them.

This should alarm us all!! All three of these were banned. I Am Enough, Little Leaders, and Cece Loves Science, pulled for having Black girls on the cover or centering diversity, not for any explicit content.

When we censor voices, we censor the kids who finally saw themselves on the page. And that is why we must keep reading them! Which one will you read with your child this week?

🚨 if you have Libby STOP and watch this.

@Libby App is defaulting to allow AI authors, narrators, translators, and graphics in your feed. If you want to stick to HUMAN authors, narrators and illustrators/graohics, you have to change your settings.

I’m personally disappointed this is the default, but it’s pretty easy to go in and change, just make sure you do it!!

Let me know when you’ve fixed yours! 👇📚💛🫶

Some kids don’t just have feelings, they have BIG feelings. 💛 These are the four books I reach for when my kids need words for what’s going on inside, or just need someone to sit with them.

Librarian + mom of 2, and these live on our shelf for a reason. Which one is on yours?

Save this for your holiday list, and tell me which one your family already loves. 📚💛

As a librarian, here is what I tell parents most often.
When a child says “I hate reading,” they almost never mean the words. They mean the frustration. The book is too hard, too long, or just not them yet.

So change the book. Try a graphic novel, a joke book, a series their friend loves, a book about the thing they are obsessed with right now. Success comes first. Love follows.

You are not behind. You are one good book away.

The problem with banned books is we lose stories without really knowing why. Kids lose the chance to see themselves, or a family like theirs, reflected back on the page. And just as often, they lose the chance to learn about a tradition or a name or a family that’s new to them.

Alma and How She Got Her Name is one of those stories. It’s about a girl who thinks her name is too long, until her father tells her where every part of it came from, each name a piece of someone in her family. It’s a book about belonging, both to your own history and to each other’s.

This book has shown up on banned and challenged lists in at least 2 states. Not because of anything in its pages. Because somewhere, someone decided a story like Alma’s didn’t belong on the shelf.

Drop a 📚 if you had no idea this one was challenged. I'll keep sharing these.

Day by day, one by one, we’ll keep at it! We’ll keep pushing to get more books into the hands of more kids! 💛📚

Nearly 12,000 books were banned in public schools this last year, the highest number on record. Texas and Florida account for the vast majority of them, together making up a blueprint other states are starting to follow.

This isn’t abstract. It’s happening in real classrooms, to real kids, right now. Read the full report, I put it in my story.

Yes. Full stop.

Graphic novels require kids to track plot, infer emotion from images, and build vocabulary, all while doing something books rarely get credit for: making reading feel fun instead of like work.

If graphic novels are the thing your kid will actually pick up, that’s not a lesser version of reading. That’s the version that’s working right now.

Free early reader list with several graphic novel picks included! Comment ‘booklist’ and I’ll sent it straight to you!

Chances are you read at least one of these growing up. The Giver, Bridge to Terabithia, Charlotte’s Web, even The Hate U Give for the older kids. All challenged or banned somewhere, all still on shelves because people fought for them to be.

Which of your childhood favorites just made this list? Tell me in the comments, I bet it’s more than one.
