Raising awareness of coercive control and animal abuse. Addressing legal grey areas in agricultural settings.

In rural Australia, animals are often more than pets. They’re family, working partners and a livelihood. But in an abusive relationship, that connection can be exploited.

Threats against animals can be a form of coercive control, used to intimidate, manipulate and keep someone trapped in an abusive situation.

This can look like:

🐾 Threatening pets or working animals. Threatening to harm or kill an animal can create fear and distress, even if the threat is never carried out.

🐴 Using livestock as leverage. Animals can become bargaining chips, used to pressure someone into staying or complying with demands.

🏡 Withholding access to animals after separation. Threatening to take animals away or prevent contact can extend control beyond the end of a relationship.

🚜 Interfering with farm life. Damaging equipment, farm property or disrupting livestock care can threaten someone’s income, independence and livelihood.

💔 Harming animals to cause distress. Hurting or threatening an animal can be used to punish someone, create fear and maintain control.

For people in rural communities, leaving can be especially complicated. Animals may be difficult to relocate, accommodation can be limited, and someone may fear what will happen to their animals if they leave.

This is why the connection between animal abuse and domestic violence matters.

Recognising these behaviours is an important step towards better understanding coercive control and advocating for change in rural Australia.

Beyond The Gate Foundation Inc. is raising awareness of these issues because protecting people means understanding the realities of their lives - including the animals they love and the livelihoods they depend on.

Welcome to Beyond the Gate.

Beyond the Gate was created to raise awareness of the use of animals within coercive control and the legal grey areas that exist within agricultural settings.

We are here to advocate for those living within these environments - where animals may be used as a means of control, and where that context is not always recognised.

This includes both the people affected, and the animals involved.

Our goal is to drive legal reform where these gaps exist, and to ensure this form of coercive control is properly recognised.

We look forward to sharing with you all.
