Aquifer: Egg Meat, Sleepsang, Ol.G at Gut Level, Sheffield. 10th July 2026

Egg Meat's recent album released by @mutualismuk is a deeply psychedelic slice of adventurous bass-centric electronica, we sadly missed their album launch so were eager to catch the next available live performance - sooo good.

Sam @ssclewss had turned me on to @interworldmedia where I found Sleepsang's excellent Calico release, so we knew we were in for decent music.

From the moment we entered - in fact, even prior to entry as we navigated Gut Level's membership requirements - every tune a banger.

Met some lovely people and spent much of the evening outside having meaningful conversations ✨

George-i + Older Brother, plus LIFEISFEEDBACK at The Lanes, Bristol 30th June 2026

Ahead of their appearance at Memori festival in France, George-i + Older Brother test-drive their set on The Lanes L-Acoustics rig, supported by Bristol's LIFEISFEEDBACK.

Extending the sonic world initiated in last year's Warm Skin EP, their performance was in turns punchy, delicate, brutalising, and emotional - George-i's signature sonic precision underscoring Darius' roiling lyrical delivery. Memori Festival are in for a treat.

Moody, spacious, industrial dub sounds from LIFEISFEEDBACK was an unexpected delight.

I've known George for over a decade at this point, his musical guidance significantly shaping my taste since Kate and I liberated ourselves from the musical conservatism of the psytrance scene. It's been a joy to see his sound evolve and mature into the bleeding edge art of the past few years. Love you George ♥️

We were late to the party. Our first visit to TWH was March 2023 for Korean act Salamanda who we'd fallen in love with after their Good Morning Tapes release "Allez" a couple of years prior. On entry, BFTT was playing decent leftfield ambient stuff that I recognised, the rig sounded awesome, and there seemed to be a strictly oddballs only policy in place. We had a great time.

Visits became more regular as we ramped up overall gig consumption during challenging times, and each visit was special. We went from feeling a bit too old and out of place, to chatting with a few folk who started to recognise us, to feeling welcome and included. It's abundantly clear how important TWH is to the regulars who've called it home for many years, building the twin pillars of music and community.

The Black Lights felt like a celebration of that spirit. The atmosphere all weekend was inclusive, friendly, safe and welcoming enough to let go and give yourself to the music, dance with abandon, turn to whoever is next to you and spark up conversation without fear of judgement, and know you'll come away from the interaction with new ideas and perspectives, sometimes even new friendships.

The silent, gnarly, weirdly-upbeat-despite-deprivation star of the show of course was Blackpool itself. What a perfectly inspired choice of location.

I feel very lucky to have attended TBL, and to have spent time with so many sweet people. It opened new avenues of music for me to explore (my favourite), and left me feeling uplifted and positive - no small feat in our chaotic times. I returned lighter and less burdoned by worldly mither.

Huge thanks and heaps of love to all the crew and organisers, musicians, and everyone that made the weekend what it was. Shared experiences like this are for sure a privilege, but so important, and doubly so right now I feel, in a time where it's apparent nobody is coming to save us from rampant ugly forces, and coming together in joy will be central to our survival.

Even though TWH is closing a chapter, hopefully TBL was an indication that the fruits TWH has been seeding and cultivating for the past decade will be abundant.

BID ME DISCOURSE, I WILL LIFT ALL WITH SONG

A mad dash to Blackpool Spiritualist Church for Sunday afternoon and the final day of @theblacklights.uk in Blackpool.

Just managed to squeek in before the venue was at capacity in time for Jennifer Walton's moving performance, followed by Milkweed's raw electro-folk retelling of tales from the Ulster Cycle, capped off with Valentina Magaletti's hypnotic percussive journey.

Sustained by tea and muffins from the lovely people in the church, we essentially hid away here for much of Sunday daytime. With lack of sleep and depleted serotonin catching up with us, this sensible choice rewarded us with intimate performances and emotional release.

Big ticket headliner the BBC Philharmonic featuring new work from Mica Levi next at Winter Gardens Opera House. Classical music has always been something of a curate's egg for me. I enjoyed some of the performance, but I'm hamstrung by a terrible sense that the art of the ruling class just isn't for me. Terry Riley I'm on board with, but Jerusalem was an earworm too far.

Finally off to Blackpool Pleasure Beach where we caught closing performances in the Paradise Room.
Delicate and uplifting music from Exlruth, full contact techno from Nazar, and a delightfully punishing hardcore guitar set from The Ephemeron Loop.

Distracted by chats and general worn-out flopping around, we witnessed the baffling recreation of The Hit Man & Her until we could no longer keep our eyes open. Final treat of the weekend was seeing, and touching, the concrete paw prints of Bernie Winters' dog Schnorbitz 🐾💙

BID ME DISCOURSE, I WILL DISMANTLE THY CONCEPTION OF DANCE MUSIC

Late stage Saturday night @theblacklights.uk brought festival highlight Gescom. Following directly on from the impeccable sound design of Blackhaine, three members of Autechre-based act Gescom appeared on the balcony above Winter Gardens cavernous Olympia Hall.

Tasteful twitchy strobing lasers accompanied an hour of electronic dance bliss. Having played their part in establishing the fundamental DNA of modern electronic music, Gescom/AE taunted and teased their way through the language of rave, each composition crumbling away the moment any sense of ground or familiarity started to emerge. Masterful work executed with skill and precision.

We were a little adrift after Gescom, 'normal' music sounding mundane and unsatisfactory after having our ontologies deconstructed so completely. Then remembered @neww_wworld were hosting a party at Bad Habitz nightclub down the road.

We arrived in time for Michael Brailey & Ship Sket to rescue the situation with a chaotic sub-bass ritual. Michael's George Formby Vs Charli xcx stole the show and finished us off.

BID ME DISCOURSE, I WILL OSCILLATE EVERY MOLECULE IN THY BODY

Saturday evening continues @theblacklights.uk in Blackpool. The beautiful Winter Gardens Opera House hosts Kali Malone and Space Afrika, with a swift diversion between to @bootleg_social for SILVERWINGKILLER.

We knew nothing about Kali Malone beyond the enthusiasm of others that we should check her out, and to expect "sort of drone stuff" which if I'm honest, at the time, I didn't think I was in the mood for.

Her opening track dissolved concerns, dissolved my body, dissolved mental activity, dissolved the room, made my eyes leak.

We left SWK after a couple of tracks, agreeing to catch them in a less humid venue some time, but they were dishing it out in that place.

Space Afrika was an elaborate collaborative experiment, far transcending the description I'd been offered as "...a bit like Burial"

Incredible performances from all involved. I had, unwisely, drunk my first ever can of Monster while at SWK, so was twitching impatiently towards the end of Space Afrika 🫪 Monster. Just... no.

Psychedelic Muppet Show with aya, Jennifer Walton, and 96 Back DJing together in place of their current band project.

An unpredictable roller-coaster ride taking in all manner of tunage. Hot-boxing the strangely perma-wet venue to this kind of mayhem was a perfect end to the day.

Trundled home with aching legs, ringing ears and sodden clothes.

I literally don’t know where to start with describing The Black Lights festival, a magical weekend of music and performance organised by Salford’s The White Hotel, spread across every notable venue Blackpool has to offer.

The event began with an otherworldly dimension shift in the rococo splendour of Blackpool’s Tower Ballroom courtesy of The Caretaker’s hauntological performance piece. From that moment on, we were moving in a different time, a different psychological space, accompanied by a couple of thousand fellow freaks.

A full weekend of endless creativity, frivolity, world class performances, dodgy thrills, lofty culture and gritty hedonism, against the perfect physical and metaphorical canvas of Blackpool.

I’ve never attended an event so well curated – we knew some of the acts listed, but it was clear that anything we rocked up at would be outstanding, which I guess is what TWH does best.

On the understanding that EVERYTHING WAS BRILLIANT, particular highlights include: microplastics mischievous muppet show on Friday night, Gescom deconstructing deconstruction itself on Saturday, Michael Brailey & Ship Sket being outrageously preposterous on Saturday night, the whole afternoon in The Blackpool Spiritualist Church with Jennifer Walton, Milkweed and Valentina Magaletti, supported by kind ladies making cups of tea.

Much love to all of the team that made The Black Lights possible, I can't imagine the amount of effort and love that went into this. Also hugs to friends and random folk that created such a welcoming and safe situation for the weekend. We left inspired.
