Last Tuesday, the Black Student Union gifted four graduating seniors with a Kente Cloth graduation stole! 🖤💛🙌🏽🎓

The Kente Cloth stole is so much more than a piece of cloth: It symbolizes resilience, achievement wrought from adversity, and pride in one’s African culture & heritage.

We decided to host a short ceremony for those that wanted to be properly honored, featuring words shared by our Assistant Vice Principal Dr. Fulton, BSU Advisor Hope Miller, and BSU President Gabrielle Long. We can’t wait to see the following seniors wear it with pride on their graduation day ❤️💚🖤:

April 16th is D.C. Emancipation Day, which honors the date President Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act, freeing 3,100 enslaved people and ending slavery in Washington D.C.

Countries and states around the world hold different Emancipation Days, with 20 separate Emancipation days across the United States alone (😳). This is mainly due to the gradual and laborious process of the end of slavery between the years 1780 and 1865. For example, while Florida celebrates on May 20th, Black communities in Canada have commemorated on August 1st for over 160 years 🇨🇦🍁, both celebrating the Emancipation of African people.

The focus of days like Emancipation Day and Juneteenth are to celebrate the love, culture, and tenacity of Black Americans. Rather than just remembering the treaties signed, choose to reflect on the monumental contributions of enslaved people toward the development of modern America and their resilience despite tribulation.
