How I met J-Dilla... #bgirlchronicles by @bgirlchronicles
WHAT WAS THE DANK WORTH? "Was it like the buzz from 12s you can't earth?" Music was produced by the Herbaliser/Soundsci's @ollieteeba and written by British saxophonist Johnny Dankworth. Jay Dee helped me with the vocals. 🙏🏾🕊️ The song appeared on a 12" single and as an exclusive bonus cut for the Japanese version of my second album, "Long Way Up". I actually still have a few of these 12" singles left. The flip side features "Definition of a Yee-Yee" which was produced by the Alchemist (Mudfoot). Please see the link in my bio to my webshop. #vinylrecords #undergroundhiphop #thealchemist #brithop #internationalbgirl by @bgirlchronicles
WHO DAT? So who in Los Angeles has a DAT machine? I'm on a mission! If I can find one? I will release, for the first time ever, the song "Kinky Hair" which features one of your most fave Los Angeles emcees from the 90s! By far, some of his dopest bars EVER! It was going to be Urban Prop's leading single backed with our other song "Heavyweights Round 2" (featured on the first Project Blowed compilation)–but then? Capitol Records dropped us. Our production company, Double Platinum, were crackheads that smoked-up all the money. So this dope-ass, jazzy boombap song has just been sitting on this DAT for 33 years now. Help me get this old-azz song to the new world! #losangeleshiphop #90shiphop #urbanprop #thepharcyde #freestylefellowship by @bgirlchronicles
VOTE! Hollywood, California, 1993 – Slap a Hoe The chick (the hoe) on the left ran up on me one night at Lava Lava at Guatelinda's of Hollywood. I was not threatening or taunting her. I warned her 3 times to back up out of my personal space. She ignored my warnings and continued to advance. I counted to three then raised my hand to smack the hoe. Out of nowhere, her man, popped up and swung on me. And missed. I pushed him with all my strength, causing him to first fly backward then fall to the ground. The moment he was on the ground, I, in a cute dress and all, pounced on his blackazz, then pelted his fat belly with punches. I was connecting and then suddenly I wasn't. Next thing you know? I'm punching at air, my feet no longer touching the ground. A bigazz dude straight air-lifted me, vertically–from the back, before I could land the TKO and carried me, punching and kicking, out of the club. Last thing I saw was "Karen" dropping to her knees to console her well-injured Mandingo. The members of his notorious Los Angeles underground hip-hop group, standing around him, with their jaws dropped: Their DJ just got his azz kicked by T-Love. True story with several witnesses. His name is– HAHAHA! Y'ALL BETTER VOTE!!!! #bgirlchronicles by @bgirlchronicles
DO YOU WANNA GO TO THE LIQUOR STO'? Los Angeles, California, Circa 1985 – Ham-Dog I took this photo on the corner of Pico Blvd and Carmona Avenue, the street that I grew up on. We had just, as that full 40-ounce of OE on the ground in front of the boombox signifies, come from the liquor store. Please note the WCA (West Coast Artists graffiti crew) tag on the upper left. Me and Ham lived across the street from Dr. Dre's first babymama, Lisa. When I became the hip-hop music editor at URB Magazine, I started a hip-hop column called "Beats & Rhymes" which had a section called "Baller of the Month". Ham was the very first honoree. He dropped out of school to take care of his 3 younger brothers. He watched the kids of his older brother (one of which grew up to be R&B singer James Wright). He walked our dog Fila everyday, for years. He washed my mother's car. He always asked us if we needed anything from the liquor store. Ham used to look out for me. He was low-key security at all my house parties. He was the one who taught me how to stomp and Cripwalk. Often jailed, he was in the wrong at times. But his heart was always in the right. #Flashbackfriday #cgirlchronicles #1980s #carmonaavenue by @bgirlchronicles
LESSON 6: THE LECTURE Los Angeles, California, 1997 – Kind of Blue During our negotiations with Ubiquity Records, Cut Chemist, then my client, played his "Lesson 6" song for me. As his manager, I quickly realized the impact this track would have on hardcore hip-hop fans, turntablists and vinyl diggers. As a fellow hip-hop artist, there was one part of the track that caught my ear. So I had This Kid Named Miles sample and loop that one part and with that? This song, "Aromatherapy" was created. Though it was an uncleared sample (as in he didn't own sh*t), I still, as a courtesy, asked Cut Chemist for his permission before sampling it. Then my homegirl Sarah and I "vocal-sampled"/snatched the melody from Coltrane's "Kind of Blue" for our verses. Miles then played guitar, laid the dope scratches and then once again invited his father, the legendary Fred Tackett, to lay some smoking and jazzy trumpet riffs. Fred is the one who played the trumpet on my song "Wanna Beez" (feat. Chali 2na). He is also the one who wrote Little Feat's "Fool Yourself". Veteran hip-hop music vinyl diggers should know, by this late juncture, that this song was famously sampled for A Tribe Called Quest's "Bonita Applebum". I believe, to date, that my music is the only hip-hop music that Fred Tackett has actually made a personal appearance on. And if not that? Then my music represents his very first appearance(s) on hip-hop songs. I have so many dope BTS stories like this. Stories that have never been told until now. #bgirlchronicles #90shiphop #jazzhop #vinylrecords #cutchemist The T-Love song featured in this reel is taken from the "Long Way Up: The Basement Tapes" double-vinyl LP. by @bgirlchronicles
THE RETURN OF THE ORIGINAL ART-FORM I negotiated this contract. I actually negotiated several of his contracts when I managed him, including Ubiquity's "Lesson 6". I stopped managing him when I moved to London. There is indeed a deeper story here which actually climaxed in Paris. I hadn't seen or spoken to him in over a decade. I stopped f*ckin' with him because of the way he allowed his group members to sue me, damage my reputation, bully me and vandalize my father's home. He, along with Dilated Peoples, just sat back and looked the other way, causing me to end all ties with all of them, almost 30 years ago. Cut got sh*t-faced drunk that night. He wore guilt like a cheap silk suit. Once inebriated? He told me the story behind all the J5 harassment. You see? I never even knew. They just started f*ckin' with me out of nowhere (i.e., stole the T-Love Dot-com and tried to sell it back to me at an overinflated and exorbitant price). He asked me if I knew this white girl named Lori Boula. I did not. The name did not sound familiar to me at all. He broke down how she was the one feeding Jurassic 5 and Dilated Peoples lies about me. "You don't know her?" Me: No, I don't. Who TF is she? Smashed off of some goodazz French red wine, he recounted the whole salacious story. Some 12 years after all the damage had already been done. By a YT bitch that I don't even know. I share THIS story to spread the word: T-Love is now back living in L.A. Y'all let that hoe know that I'm comin' for her and that she should pray that she never sees me. The restaurant was closing so I just about carried Cut's drunkazz back to his hotel room where he had the audacity to suggest that I go back to managing him. He showed me a photo of this chick. I now knew what she looked like. After all the damage done unto me/my life and my father's home. After it got so bad that I had to flee my own hometown. Now, don't get me wrong–had I never moved to London, I would have never connected with Jay Dee. Who did indeed change my life. But she will still get rushed should I ever see her. Let her azz know that T-Love is looking for her. Tread lightly with your comments. I do bite. by @bgirlchronicles
THAT 90s SHOW It took 3 days to consolidate all my photos into this one box. Photos, negatives and slides from the 90s were spread between 10 different boxes. All mixed in with all my other photos from the 60s, 70s and 80s. I literally had to go through each box, each stack. Grueling work. I'm already exhausted and haven't even begun the scanning yet. But I'm happy to announce that every single last photo I took during the 90s is in this damn box. And now that I've finally seen every single last photo? I'M NOW EXCITED AF! 😁 But now? I sleep. #90shiphop #goldenera #boombap #hiphophistory #hiphopjournalism by @bgirlchronicles

MARKED UNSAFE HOLLYWOOD, California, 1992 – Urban Prop's Recording Studio (photo) "Mark 7 ways to path of unfresh. Starts with 'Reading's Fundamental', could end with your death. A negative agenda will cost you tinder. Ask the 7th member how it felt to go timber. The bitch of blah thought he was raw but had flaw. When it came to them skills, ego bigger than awe. The reap of what was sowed now showed in sales figures. Degrading, indicating back to broke n*gga. N*gga thought he was the bomb, tryna ride the T-Love Dot Com..." –"Intellectual Proptease" by T-Love and DJ Ollie Teeba The verse above is about how Mark 7 and Jurassic 5 stole "T-Love.com" and then tried to sell it back to me for around $50k. I, in turn, acted like I was interested in buying it, negotiating back and forth with Jurassic 5's lawyer every single day for almost a year. Basically, until I was sure that the legal bill exceeded the original amount of that which they were asking for. Once their lawyer confirmed to me that her and her firm's fees sat around $80k? I promptly withdrew my interest and officially terminated all negotiations without ever paying them a dime. Within about a year or so of my withdrawal, J5 was dropped by Interscope Records and Mark was living in a motel. Moral of this story: DO NOT F*CK WITH T-LOVE! ESPECIALLY after she worked for free, for years to blow you and your group up. Karma will come for you. And? It finally did. J5 fans please enjoy this old photo because it will not go anywhere near my book. Also? Tread VERY carefully with your comments. I do bite. #90shiphop #losangeleshiphop #jurassic5 #goodlifecafe by @bgirlchronicles
PHAR FROM THE WASCALS LOS ANGELES, California, 1993 – VIBE Magazine Launch Party My photos usually sucked because both my camera and my photography skills sucked. But as I curate photos for my 90s hip-hop coffee table book? I'm slowly realizing that what mattered most was that I successfully captured historical hip-hop moments. Like this one with the Wascals' Kamau (Alfalfa) and the Pharcyde's Tre (Slimkid 3). #90shiphop #losangeleshiphop #vibemagazine #deliciousvinyl #pharcyde by @bgirlchronicles
