Before a beautiful work emerges, there is a wonder ride too a sweeping journey through the Aravalli Range where the Summer Sprint unfolds across 18 kilometers of untamed trails, enriched with a spirit of location scavenging. Like strokes on a canvas, the rugged hills, dense jungle paths, and winding terrain shape an experience crafted for seasoned riders, where every turn feels raw, free, and alive. taken in Aravali Hills by @bhargavbarla

@bhargavbarla ‘s practice navigates the interplay of memory, place, and light—transforming the ordinary into cinematic, single-image narratives. His latest series, Natural Harbour, exhibited with us at the 16th edition of the India Art Fair explores the oral histories and shifting landscapes of Visakhapatnam. His work blurs the boundaries between documentary realism and a painterly sensibility, drawing viewers into moments that exist between presence and absence.

Bhargav’s engagement with painting is deeply rooted in personal history. As he describes, his first aesthetic awakening occurred during a visit to the Visakha Museum in Class 8, where his father exhibited alongside artists like D.S. Ambu Rao. Encountering archival images of Visakhapatnam’s pre-modern landscapes, he became fascinated by the transformation of cityscapes over time.

Trained within the academic lineage of the Bengal School of Painting, where his father studied, Bhargav’s early practice was shaped by its stylistic ethos. However, his time at Santiniketan marked a shift towards surrealist dreamscapes, a realm in which painting allowed him to transcend the conceptual constraints of photography. In his process, painting functions as an extension of vision, enabling the articulation of omnipresent, psychologically charged spaces.

Bhargav holds a BFA in Painting from Andhra University (2014), an MFA in Painting from Santiniketan (2016), and a second Master’s in Performing Art and Design from Shiv Nadar University (2019). His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including Art Mumbai (2024) and India Art Fair (2023, 2024) with Art Centrix Space, Brink at Art Centrix Space, New Delhi (2022), Building Bridges at Old Tourist Burma Building, Yangon, Myanmar (2019), a solo exhibition at Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Noida (2019), and Building Bridges at Gallery Sumukha, Bangalore (2018).
