During this week’s composition studio, we had 3 composers presented their music in the masterclass for our guest composer/professor, Dr. Brian Harnetty, visiting from The Ohio State University. Thank you so much Dr. Harnetty for spending time with us and providing valuable feedback! by @bharnetty

I was really excited to contribute a chapter to Archival Entanglements, an anthology on archives in the arts and humanities, which is now published! I wrote about the Forest Listening Rooms project. Link to learn more about the book in my bio! by @bharnetty
Mack Hagood at the Phantom Power podcast has just released an online zine called “Nothing Is Background,” which features many different sound artists and their approaches to listening. Artist Spotlight: Brian Harnetty (@bharnetty) Brian Harnetty is an interdisciplinary artist, composer, and writer whose work connects sound, archives, ethnography, and ecology. Through listening, field recordings, and archival materials, his practice explores the intersections of history, place, memory, and social change. This summer, Brian joined us at Marble House Project for Grounded, an invitational residency bringing together artists and practitioners working across ecology, land, and environmental research. by @bharnetty
NEW EPISODE: Composer @bharnetty spoke to us about how music by Igor Stravinsky, Frederic Rzweski, and Addie Graham shaped his own work. Listen at the link in the bio or wherever you get your podcasts. Mort and Dot, his most recent recording, is available via his page on Bandcamp. by @bharnetty
Last month, I made it back to one of my favorite places: the Marble House Project artist residency in Vermont. It was a fantastic gathering of environmental artists, where we talked about everything from farming, to soil, to beaver dams. The other artists were wonderful, and to be in the mountains of Vermont is definitely my happy place. We even did a sound walk and listening session :) Plus, I got to catch up with my pal @oh_deary_ ! by @bharnetty
@essentialtremors is one of my absolute favorite music podcasts. If you look at the list of people they have interviewed over the years, you'll see many of the living musicians that I most admire. A few years ago, I recorded an episode with Matthew Byars and we talked about three pieces of music that deeply influenced me as a young composer: Stravinsky's "Les Noces," Fred Rzewski's "Coming Together," and the ballad singing of Addie Graham. When we recorded the episode, I must have been excited, because I sure do ramble on! I'm so glad this podcast is out now -- have a listen! Last night we welcomed the Grounded Invitational Residency cohort. This short 10-day residency is an opportunity for artists and other practitioners working in or with soil to come together, engage with each other and learn. There is programming open to the public on the weekend days. (See our event page; link in bio or our other posts on Instagram). Excited to share that I’m a 2026 @NewMusicUSA Creator Fund awardee! 🎉 I’ll use this grant to help with a new project called "The Surveyors," which explores the landscapes and people of Appalachian Ohio. I’m honored to be part of this group of artists pushing music forward! The New Music Creator Fund offers grants to individual music creators to reach the next stage of their creative practice. #ListeningForward #2026CreatorFund by @bharnetty
Brian Harnetty’s, “This was once a forest, This was once a sea still” invites viewers into Ohio’s layered natural history through video and sound. Created after visits to Davey Woods State Nature Preserve in St. Paris, Caesar Creek State Park in Waynesville, and Glacial Grooves Geological Preserve on Kelleys Island in Lake Erie, the work reflects on landscapes shaped over thousands of years, tracing what once existed beneath our feet and what still remains. Born in Columbus, Ohio, Harnetty transforms these environments into a meditative 5 minute and 30 second loop that blurs memory, ecology, and time. Experience the work now in our Ohio Now exhibition until August 2nd. by @bharnetty
Many of you know that I’ve been involved with the @tecumsehtheater in Shawnee, Ohio, for several years. And now — it’s almost hard to believe — the theater is having its grand reopening on June 6th! This is a result of FIFTY years of community members working together to save and restore the theater, and I couldn’t be more excited. As the Board President of Sunday Creek Associates (the non-profit that owns and runs the theater), I am so proud of all of the people who have worked tirelessly to make this event and the restoration of the theater possible. Plus, my son Henry and I will be opening up the show — we’ll get to play on the same stage my grandfather Mordecai played on in the 1920s. It’s going to be a great evening! Please come! Buy your tickets here or click the link in my bio (they’re going fast!): https://www.tecumsehtheater.org/lftc by @bharnetty
