What if the thing that gives life could also be used to control it? And what if breaking that control meant breaking the very machine that held it in place? On 4 October at 11 AM, we gather for a reading of Muktadhara, Rabindranath Tagore’s powerful play about power, technology, oppression and the human desire for freedom. In the kingdom of Uttarakut, a massive dam gives the king control over the Muktadhara river — and over the people of Shiv-Tarai who depend on it. But when technology becomes a weapon of power, Prince Abhijit finds himself caught between the kingdom he has inherited and the people whose freedom it threatens. A story about power, nature, technology, sacrifice and the extraordinary courage it takes to break what keeps others from being free. Following the reading, we’ll be in conversation with Ahon Gooptu, playwright, actor and theatre-maker, and Ninad Samaddar, theatre-maker, actor, producer and teacher-practitioner. Come read. What if your grief was the only thing you were allowed to sell? And what if, one day, you decided to use it to fight back? On 6 September at 11 AM, we gather for a reading of Rudali, Usha Ganguli’s powerful stage adaptation of Mahasweta Devi’s story. Sanichari has spent her life being denied dignity, choice and even the right to grieve. But when survival turns her into a professional mourner, her tears become labour. Labour becomes solidarity. And solidarity becomes resistance. A story about women, grief, caste, survival and the extraordinary power of finding your voice together. Following the reading, we’ll be in conversation with Anirudh Sarkar, Director of Rangakarmee and a disciple of Usha Ganguli, and Shuktara Lal, theatre director, drama therapist and educator.
