Really I was looking for a mama merganser and her fluffballs which eluded me. But this spark of yellow shot past me and struck a lovely pose nearby, and then patiently stayed until I got a clear and focussed capture. Handsome AND polite!

We find so much delight in the rippling spring ponds, recently released from icy bondage and suddenly, overnight, alive with amiable friends...chatting, singing and flirting happily!
There are 4 of these horned grebes here, but this is the most distinctive of the bunch. He reminded me of a poodle at first, but maybe more so of a fancy chicken with that little beak. Hmmm pond chicken?😂

Mountain bluebirds are welcomed to southern Alberta with thousands of houses provided by farmers and ranchers along the fence lines. This is nest building season and gathering of materials is well under way, by this lad’s lady. He is on guard.
