POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Spent the morning in an RV, and it’s the clearest classroom I know for indoor air.

Shrink a house down to 250 square feet, seal it tight, then add a propane stove, a few people, and a box full of particleboard cabinets. Everything that happens slowly in your home happens here in minutes.

CO2 from breathing climbs until the air feels stale and heavy. Cook one meal and fine particles spike off the burner. The cabinetry, foam, and adhesives quietly off-gas VOCs into a space with almost nowhere for them to escape.

But here’s the one that stops you cold: this rig had an exhaust leak. That means combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, were finding their way into the cabin instead of going out. You can’t see it, you can’t smell it, and in a sealed space it’s the kind of thing that turns dangerous before anyone notices.

Your home tells the same story on a longer timeline. Newer, tighter, better-built homes hold their air in beautifully - great for the energy bill, and quietly terrible for what you’re actually breathing. The only real difference is you can’t feel it stacking up the way you can in a parked RV at noon.

The fix isn’t fear. It’s a number. Air is the one thing in your house nobody’s measuring, so it’s the one thing nobody’s managing.

Part of an ongoing series on what you’re breathing.

The Sandy fire in Simi Valley is burning right now. It’s May.

California’s fire season starts roughly a month earlier than it did 30 years ago; in some regions, two and a half months earlier. That’s not a forecast, that’s published research. Which means the way most homeowners think about indoor air, as a fall problem, is built on a season that doesn’t exist anymore.

The weather app showed PM2.5 at 18 µg/m³ this morning. AQI of 72. Moderate.

I was at the Rose Bowl flea market with a monitor. My reading: 165 µg/m³. The EPA 24-hour health limit is 35.

The difference isn’t a malfunction. Regional AQI monitors are miles away, averaging air across a wide area. What they miss: diesel generators, vendor exhaust, hundreds of idling cars in a parking lot, dust kicked up by foot traffic, burning incense, decades of particulates stirred up from old goods.

The app tells you about the region. The monitor tells you about the air you’re actually standing in.

The Baseline Field Readings. We go. We measure. We share what we find.

Link in bio for the full IAQ reference. Where should we check next?
