POSTS STORIES REELS

Consider this the cover story. I’m Bryant Perkins, the host and creator of the BHostel podcast, and I realized I never properly introduced myself. In 2020 the pandemic pushed me out of Florida and into a part-time job at Drifter Jack’s Hostel in Austin, Texas, with my recording gear riding in the trunk of my car. I shared a bunk, a bathroom and a kitchen with strangers, and I kept watching people walk through the door with stories worth telling. Swipe, and I’ll tell you what happened next.

Seeing all those people come through, I realized there were stories in that building. So I set up in the common room at Drifter Jack’s and started recording them. Season 1 went live in March 2021, and Season 2 was recorded down the road at Firehouse Hostel. More than 200 nights and 40 hostels on three continents later, I still check in for the room full of strangers, not the bunk bed. Swipe for the part people ask me about most.

After two seasons I took a break and went to work in the nonprofit world. I found the same mission there that I had in the hostel: lift up the voices that usually get skipped. I came back with a team I met along the way, Brooke McKelvey, Larry George and Emma Pion-Berlin, and one rule I still keep. No one works for me. We all work together. Every episode is one traveler and one story, told in the first person. Season 4 is streaming now on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and iHeartRadio, recorded in hostels from Denver to Portland. One more swipe, because the back cover is about you.

This show has one mantra: where strangers become storytellers. I hope it makes all of us a little more open to the people next to us, because everyone has a story. So tell me yours. Drop the short version in the comments, and I might ask you to tell the long version on the show. Follow @bhostelpod, and share this with the person you met in a hostel and never forgot. Trust the process, and you be the storyteller.

Season 1. Episode 7: Is the top bunk for people who want to destroy the world, or is it for people who like adventure? Either way, getting down in the morning is a V0 bouldering problem. If you don’t know what that is, go look it up.

Happy Halloween from Lisbon. 🎃

Seven pumpkins. One table. Strangers when the first one opened, a crew by the time the last one was done.

@goodmorninghostel turned its common room into a carving studio and @manuazpiroz set the table. The room did the rest. This is what a hostel does best. It takes people who checked in alone and gives them a reason to stay at the table.

Keep watching for number seven.
