🚨PRESS RELEASE: Community & Local Leaders Unite to Reject Expansion of Gambling In Earls Court

Bianca Jagger said:

“As a human rights defender, I cannot look at the proposed SilverTime 24hr Adult Gaming Centre at 177–179 Earl’s Court Rd simply as another licensing application. My concern is how the proposed Gaming Centre will impact our community. I look at the children and young people who live, study and travel through this area. I look at vulnerable people, including those struggling with addiction and other difficulties. I look at a neighbourhood already facing serious pressures from antisocial behaviour and crime.

Our councillors have a responsibility to protect those who are the most vulnerable.

This is the wrong place for another 24hr gambling venue.

Earl’s Court is not an isolated case. It is a warning about a national crisis of gambling, betting and gaming and the growing saturation of our high streets.
PM Andy Burnham has promised to scrap the ‘Aim to Permit’ rule UK Gambling Act 2005. I urge him to act now. Local communities must have the power to protect themselves, and elected councils must have the power to say no when their communities are at stake.
The test of any society is how well it protects those who are most vulnerable. We must put the protection of people before the expansion of gambling.”

Joe Powell MP said:

“High Street slot machines and casinos are hollowing out high streets across London, including in our community. That is why I am campaigning to prevent the opening of a new 24/7 adult gaming centre in Earl’s Court.
These casinos and gambling shops prey on the most vulnerable people in my constituency, many of whom are struggling with addiction, debt, or substance misuse. They contribute very little to the vitality of our high streets, and most residents I speak to are strongly opposed to them.
I’m glad that the Government has listened to communities and agreed to remove the ‘Aim to Permit’ rules, and introduce new ‘Gambling Impact Assessments’. Remembering Hockney, Baselitz and Kusama

Creating masterpieces until the very end. Remembering Hockney, Baselitz and Kusama.

In the space of four months, we have lost Georg Baselitz, David Hockney and Yayoi Kusama. The art world feels emptier now. The Titans are gone, leaving behind a deafening silence.

These three giants did not merely paint or sculpt. They explored boundless creative mediums and radically changed the way humanity perceives space, colour and form. Yet, beyond their very different aesthetic revolutions, they shared a rare, unyielding fate. They were creators who dedicated their entire existences to the avant-garde, choosing to create masterpieces until, and with, their very last breaths.

While millions of admirers now mourn their public legacies, for me, the loss of David and Georg carries the sharp, intimate ache of personal absence. To have counted them as dear friends across decades is to have witnessed firsthand the exhausting, exhilarating reality of a life wholly consumed by the act of creation.

True artists do not retire. They do not put down the brush or the chisel when the world tells them they have achieved enough.
As David once said: “You don’t retire doing this.”

Hockney, Baselitz and Kusama proved that art is not a career, but an existential necessity.

I did not know Yayoi Kusama as I knew David and Georg, but I long admired the audacity and persistence of her vision. She taught us that infinity could be captured within the precise boundaries of a single dot.

For Kusama, repetition was never merely a stylistic choice. It became a profound language through which vulnerability, infinity and cosmic love could be transformed into monumental artistic power.

Today, my dear friend Andy Warhol would have celebrated his 97th birthday. He was a beloved friend with whom I spent many treasured moments. Andy remains an important part of my life and I will always miss him. by @biancajagger

An incredible turnout in Earl’s Court last night, with hundreds of residents coming together to stand up against SilverTime’s latest attempt to take over our high streets.

I am determined that we will explore every possible avenue to stop this happening - thank you to the Earl’s Court Society, @biancajagger and local councillors for joining together to say enough is enough.

SilverTime wants to expand its gambling operation at a prominent 24/7 site on Earl’s Court Road, right opposite the tube station through which thousands of children commute every day and near to several places housing vulnerable residents.

This is exactly why campaigns like this matter - and why I’m so pleased @andy.burnham has committed to changing the law so that permissive ‘Aim to Permit’ gambling legislation is abolished, new Adult Gaming Centres have to go through the planning system, and cumulative impact of clustering will be considered.

Our campaign has helped to secure these massive changes to Government policy - so thank you to everyone who supported it.

But we can’t let SilverTime win just when the law is about to change so I’ll keep working with residents and other local leaders to make sure their voices are heard.

David Hockney was Le Roi Soleil of the art world. I met David in the early 70s with my dear friends Ossie Clark and Celia Birtwell. He later painted my portrait in his London flat, and over the years I visited him both in London and Los Angeles.

He radiated light, colour, beauty and joy. His art illuminated the world, and his curiosity never diminished. He spent countless hours looking at the world around him. He noticed what many of us missed: the changing light, the arrival of spring, the subtle transitions between seasons. His work was a celebration of nature, beauty and colour.

David was an unapologetic eternal rebel. Fiercely independent and endlessly curious, he embraced new ways of seeing throughout his life. He experimented with photography, Polaroids, fax machines, iPhones and iPads, always exploring how art could capture our experience of the world.

During the pandemic he shared drawings from his Normandy garden with the message: “Do remember they can’t cancel spring.” It brought hope to millions.

After attending an event at the Serpentine, I persuaded @BettinaKorek to allow me to visit, after hours, the exhibition A Year in Normandie and Some Other Thoughts About Painting. Standing before his work, I was moved and overwhelmed by its scale, beauty and emotional power. I filmed more than 9 mins of footage on my phone, I wanted to preserve every detail of that remarkable celebration of the changing seasons.

The last time I saw David was at the opening of David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away) at the Lightroom Feb ’25. The next day I returned to experience the immersive exhibition when it was less crowded. I lay on a bench, mesmerised, enthralled, as the images surrounded me on all sides, including the ceiling, with David’s voice narrating. The projections immersed us in his world of perception and colour.

David shared his life with Jean-Pierre Gonçalves de Lima, known as JP.

“The sense and purpose of my paintings are pleasure and joy,”he said. No artist embodied those words more completely. Today the world has lost one of its greatest artists. I have lost a friend.

Thank you David, for teaching us how to see.

🚨 #SOSNicaragua La presión internacional contra el régimen de Daniel Ortega y Rosario Murillo continúa aumentando.

Estados Unidos anunció nuevas sanciones contra funcionarios vinculados a la represión y las violaciones de derechos humanos en Nicaragua, en una medida que busca exigir rendición de cuentas por los abusos cometidos contra el pueblo nicaragüense.

El congresista Carlos Giménez respaldó la decisión y afirmó:

“La dictadura Ortega-Murillo no tiene perdón. Son criminales y terroristas que deben enfrentar todo el peso de la ley. Aplaudo al secretario Marco Rubio por imponer sanciones contra sus esbirros y seguiremos trabajando para aumentar la presión sobre el régimen”.

👉🏿 I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend Georg Baselitz, the great pioneering German postwar artist, painter, sculptor and printmaker.

Alongside Gerhard Richter, Anselm Kiefer, Sigmar Polke and A.R. Penck, Baselitz belonged to the generation of postwar artists who confronted the trauma, memory and moral devastation left by the Second World War.

“I am brutal, naïve and Gothic” Georg told Artforum in 1995. “I was born into a destroyed order, a destroyed landscape, a destroyed people, a destroyed society. And I didn’t want to reestablish an order: I’d seen enough so-called order. I was forced to question everything, to be ‘naïve,’ to start again.”

He wanted, as he told The Guardian in 2014, “to examine what it was to be a German now.”

The images in the upcoming book ‘Eroi d’Oro “honour Georg’s extraordinary artistic legacy and his final exhibition, ‘Heroes of Gold’ presented by the Fondazione Giorgio Cini during the Venice Biennale, curated by Luca Massimo Barbero and supported by Thaddaeus Ropac.

The exhibition reflected on mortality, memory, artistic legacy and the passage of time. Revisiting the spirit of his celebrated “Hero” paintings of the 1960s, Baselitz created luminous gold paintings that gave his figures an almost transcendent presence.

Among the photographs I have chosen are works from his exhibition at the Venice Biennale, the retrospective at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, paintings shown at Thaddaeus Ropac Salzburg, photographs of Georg and Elke, and memories I will always treasure.

I was privileged to have known him. I am a great admirer of his courage and his outstanding works of art.

My heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Elke Baselitz, sons Daniel Blau and Anton Kern, family, friends, studio team and all who mourn his passing.

Today Thaddaeus Ropac Paris Pantin opened the ‘Nymphäum’ exhibition of 20 new painting by Anselm Kiefer.

Anselm Kiefer is widely regarded as one of the most important contemporary artists because he has confronted subjects that many in postwar Germany initially sought to avoid. His work engages directly with historical guilt, cultural memory and the enduring consequences of the Holocaust. In doing so, he helped reopen a necessary and often uncomfortable dialogue about how societies remember, deny or attempt to process traumatic pasts.

Kiefer’s power lies not only in his themes but in his materials. His monumental works incorporate ash, lead, straw and clay, evoking destruction while suggesting transformation and the cycle of life. Their scarred surfaces seem to bear witness to history itself.

He draws on literature, mythology and philosophy, invoking figures such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, poets like Paul Celan and painters like Van Gogh. These references question how cultural achievement can coexist with moral failure, and how memory endures through language.

His recent exhibition, Nymphäum, at Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery in Pantin, Paris continues this inquiry. The works evoke landscapes that are both ancient and wounded, reflecting cycles of destruction and renewal.

Kiefer reminds us that art can be a space of moral reflection, confronting the darkest chapters of history while holding open the possibility of renewal.

He once said ‘Art is longing. You never arrive, but you keep going in the hope that you will …’

I have known and admired Anselm Keifer’s work for many years. Sadly, I was unable to attend the opening of Nymphäum, but I look forward to seeing it soon.
