My birth ignited a flame in me. I never wanted anyone to feel like I did in birth. Through helping and protecting others I healed my birth and parenting grief…

Doula work beautifully changed and saved my life. It made me a better mom.

I’m so grateful for it every single day.

Thinking about doula care?! I’d love to chat with you about it.

In the current birthing environment, affirming and evidence-based care is harder to achieve than it should be!

Having doula support is proven to dramatically increase better outcomes and decreases unwanted interventions.

I’m here to support however you want to birth, my goal is to ensure you choose what happens for you and your baby.

DM if you have any questions or want to chat!

We need more doulas!! Comment BOOK to get your free 32 page guide to support your research in becoming a doula.

Reproductive violence has a name… and it belongs in your vocabulary.

A 2024 UN Women / Global Justice Center paper defines it as acts or omissions that harm someone by interfering with their reproductive autonomy.

It includes forced pregnancy, enforced sterilization, forced abortion and contraception, denial of abortion care, blocked access to reproductive healthcare, and the destruction of maternity infrastructure.

The finding: this harm is chronically under-documented in international investigations. Not because it isn’t happening, but because investigators lacked the mandate, training, or language to record it.

What doesn’t get documented doesn’t get counted, funded, or repaired.

The barriers they named will sound familiar to birth workers. Stigma around reproductive autonomy. Euphemistic language. Self-censorship.

Why it matters for us: we already support folks in the moments where reproductive autonomy is honoured or taken.

We already witness what never makes it into a chart. (It’s like screaming into the ether, y’all!!)

Precise language is protective.

ā€œDenial of abortion careā€ is a legal category, not a euphemism.

Naming things accurately is part of the work.

What a morning! While recording an episode for @hot_brave_podcast this morning @biancasprague saw this man who had been on the loose for the last 4 days at the bottom of her driveway.

He looked around before ducking into the trees and down her neighbours driveway which is hidden from the road. She ran down and locked her doors and called 911… within minutes the police and community supports were searching the lots across the street. He was arrested within the hour and CTV came to interview for the tip that captured a serial rapist.

Comment BIRTH to find out about our birth doula training summer sale!

Full certification for only $425 this week! The first 10 registrations get a free doula shirt!

If you wanna know what ACOG has to say about doulas now, here it is:

ACOG’s new committee statement says doula-clinician partnerships improve communication, patient-centered care, and continuity of care, plus better outcomes overall: shorter labor, fewer C-sections, higher birth satisfaction, and more breastfeeding success.

It calls out that mistreatment during birth is common, especially for Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous patients, and positions doulas as key to closing that gap.

Their five recommendations:

1. OBs should educate themselves on what doulas actually do,
2. build respectful team structures that include them,
3. inform patients about doula options and local resources,
4. understand the patchwork of coverage and payment models,
5. and push for more research on doula-clinician collaboration.

It also flags real barriers, like the lack of one universal certifying body and the ongoing struggle doulas face getting reimbursed through Medicaid.

My weekend musings for y’all.

Make your choices that feel right for you.

Use your gut…. and it’s not always logical.

Don’t go on the third date even though they look good on paper.

Pick the daycare that felt right even though it’s 8 mins further from your house.

Take the leap and be a doula (ok, biased here, but gosh it’s a wonderful career)

Don’t go to the family bbq if you don’t want to.

I’m cheering you on… and so is Ms. Winston. ā¤ļø taken in Sackville, New Brunswick by @biancasprague

Most moms stop themselves from becoming doulas because they worry if they can make it all work.

As a single mom doula for almost 20 years, I promise you can!

A few clients a month.
Flexible schedule.
Work that fills you up instead of draining you.
You show up fully for a family during one of the most important moments of their life..and then you come home. To your garden. Your kids. Your dog. Your ā€˜not work’ life.

That’s what doula work looks like.

And it’s something you can train for, even as a mom.

If you’ve been thinking about this, this is your sign to look into it.

Comment EARLYBIRD to learn about our doula training program and I’ll send you the details. taken in Moncton, New Brunswick by @biancasprague
