In the 1980s, Campagnolo was already the benchmark for prestige in professional cycling. But for a small Swiss company, even the finest Italian components weren’t quite enough.

Founded in Zurich by Artemio Granzotto, ICS (Italcicli Cycle Systems) took Campagnolo components to another level, combining mechanical modifications with exceptional finishing and craftsmanship.

Gold-plated Super Record groupsets, extensively modified derailleurs, polished cranksets and intricate detailing transformed racing components into mechanical jewellery.

But ICS was more than gold and decoration. Behind the extravagant finishes were genuine attempts to refine the mechanics, reduce weight and improve performance.

A remarkable chapter in cycling history, when Italian engineering met Swiss precision, and exclusivity was pushed to its limits.

Giuseppe “Peppino” Drali was born in Milan in 1928 into a family already deeply connected to Bianchi.

His father Carlo had worked in the legendary Bianchi Reparto Corse, building racing frames for some of the greatest riders of his generation. Peppino grew up in the workshop, learning to file, braze and build by hand, and the Drali name would remain closely tied to Bianchi long after the family left the factory.

Then came an unusual chapter in Bianchi history. When Bianchi withdrew from racing and closed its historic Reparto Corse at the end of the 1960s, Drali was entrusted with continuing part of its work. Bianchi supplied the materials; Peppino built the frames.

The result became known as the Bianchi Speciale Elaborata Drali. These were not simply standard Specialissima frames assembled elsewhere. Drali was effectively allowed to reinterpret them, producing made-to-measure Bianchi bicycles with the kind of individual finishing, modifications and weight-saving details usually reserved for racing-department machines.

Very few are known, and no two appear to be exactly alike.

The example shown here from @bianchi.collection combines the language of a late-1960s Bianchi Specialissima with unmistakable Drali details: exceptionally refined work around the fork, distinctive dovetail-shaped seatstay ends, an integrated headset, heavily relieved lugs and a 130 mm rear triangle.

Even its serial number remains cryptic, making precise dating possible only through comparison with the handful of similar surviving frames.

It sits somewhere between two identities. A Bianchi by name and material. A Drali by hand.
