Join us next Thursday as part of @whitechapelgallery Lates curated by @ronanksm for a special evening book club and shared reflection space in response Joy Gregory: Catching Flies With Honey.

Inside the ‘Fierce & Fearless’ installation, we’ll explore the intertwined themes of folklore, myth, and legend – tracing threads of history, identity, and language that run through both Gregory’s visual storytelling and our focus title, Bless the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head by Warsan Shire. A powerful debut grounded in familial and cultural memory exploring layered experiences of the feminine woven through migration, tenderness, and survival.

An invitation to read, reflect, and draw connections between image and word. Attendees are warmly encouraged to bring along a favourite poem, folklore, or story of their own choosing that resonates with these themes to share during the session.

With a curated mini pop up library available to browse throughout the evening.

A book that preaches the power of art to heal, investigating fiction as a gateway into our own realities. With a sense of kinship in every word of sixteen brutally honest and vulnerable essays on the most formative experiences of Chee’s life. His time as a tarot reader, Rosaries, writing life, Korea, America, Trump and everything in between. Entailing stories of survival and activism during the AIDS pandemic as a member of the ACT UP group in the 80’s. Investigations of race, class, gender and many many notes shared from his own mentors, professors and friends made and lost along the way.

The late Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o 1938-2025
born in Limuru, Kenya, a titan of African literature.
A fearless voice in the struggle against colonialism, oppression, and cultural erasure, Ngũgĩ’s work has left an indelible mark on African literature and postcolonial thought. Initially writing in English, Ngũgĩ gained international recognition with novels like Weep Not, Child (1964), The River Between (1965), and A Grain of Wheat (1967), which explore Kenya’s fight for independence and the complexities of postcolonial identity. His early works capture the trauma and resilience of a nation under colonial rule, offering nuanced portrayals of history and community.
In the late 60’s Ngugi led a revolution at the University of Nairobi, which had resulted in the university dropping English Literature as a course of study, and replacing it with one that positioned African Literatures, oral and written, at the centre. A decade later, he abandon English and began writing in his native Gikuyu that marked a radical turning point in his life and career. Believing that language is a tool of both oppression and liberation, Ngũgĩ began composing in Gikuyu to reclaim African narratives. His groundbreaking novel Devil on the Cross was written while imprisoned without trial for his activism—a powerful testament to the intersection of literature and resistance.
Beyond fiction, Ngũgĩ is a prolific essayist and scholar. His influential work Decolonising the Mind (1986) has become a cornerstone of postcolonial studies, challenging generations to rethink the cultural and psychological legacies of imperialism. His courage, integrity, and unwavering commitment to African languages and cultures have inspired writers and thinkers across the world. by @bibisbooks

Still basking in the light of last weeks poetry night at Maison Bertaux - a delicious evening of magical readings, performance and delightful pastries - illuminating the eternal life of Audre Lorde.
