Between the Abstract and the Familiar

The natural world takes on an uncertain quality in Eve Biddle’s Field Notes. Her images can appear both abstract and literal, alive and lifeless.

Through layering, translation, and physical intervention, Biddle transforms the landscape into something that asks us to look a little longer.

Known for her experimental, adventurous practice spanning sculpture, installation, #printmaking, #photography, and radical collaborations with other artists, Eve Biddle (@biddlebiddle), co-founder of the @WassaicProject, a New York-based #contemporaryarts institution, is currently celebrating her first solo exhibition. “Wonderlands,” on view through January 24 at the @portlandmuseum of Art, 7 Congress Square, #PortlandME, features a series of hand screen-printed photographs depicting the flora and fauna of Mount Desert Island, exploring themes of place, memory, and cyclical change through the artist’s ongoing material and technical experimentation. “Printed in saturated monochrome on elliptical wooden panels, the works reflect the artist’s enduring connection to the island, where she spent childhood summers walking the Wonderland Trail in Acadia National Park and now returns each year with her own children.”(Images © Eve Biddle.)

Field Notes, an exhibition of works by Eve Biddle, opens today at the Tremaine Gallery at Hotchkiss. Curated by Terri Moore, Director of Tremaine Gallery, the exhibition explores the natural world, archaeological references, memory, and the winding paths of our lives.

Through layering, translation, and physical intervention, Biddle reshapes the landscape genre, creating works that exist somewhere between the abstract and the literal, the living and the lifeless.

Field Notes is on view through October 18.

“Field Notes” opens at @tremaine_gallery_hotchkiss on Sept 2 and features mirrored works alongside some gigantic prints (thanks @jbarnettwinsby for always making my ideas bigger and @ryanspeth for printing these!). Thanks to @terrimoore12 for reminding me that I could show these together in conversation and laying out a beautiful show! I’m excited to be teaching students @hotchkissschool in the fall. @portlandmuseum education program got me warmed up in August. :) taken in The Tremaine Gallery by @biddlebiddle

This is a dreamy space. The Palladian Gallery @portlandmuseum holds over a decade of my print work. The blue walls are serene and peaceful. I love it.
