12 JUNE - GENERAL STRIKE OF CULTURAL WORKERS 📢

The cultural sector’s general strike in Venice received widespread support. More than 200 cultural workers joined the sit-in, while numerous Biennale pavilions closed their doors, including Canada, France, Britain, Uruguay, Finland, Iceland, Scotland, Wales, Romania and Malta. Many others also took part in the mobilisation, including Ireland, Oman, Lebanon, Luxembourg and Mexico.

Exhibition spaces and collateral events, including The Human Safety Net, SMAC and others, were closed, as were university libraries at IUAV. Technicians and exhibition installers employed by several companies also went on strike. Movements, collectives - including @biennalocene, @miriconoscibeniculturali and @saledocks - and trade unions all came together in the streets.

Today, we proved that unity among art and cultural workers is a reality. We proved that we have learned to use the strike as a tool - and that we have no intention of giving it up. We want an end to precarious employment, and we refuse to be complicit in Israel’s artwashing, or in that of any other regime.

Today marked an important step in the struggle that began on 8 May.

To the new city administration - which is, in fact, the old one, following ten years of absent cultural policies, rampant neoliberalism, touristification and the growing precarity of cultural work—to the Biennale, the Civic Museums and the companies organising exhibitions and events, we say:

You can no longer ignore us.

We are an essential part of Venice.
We are angry.
We are many.
We are organised. taken in Venezia, VE by @biennalocene

🚨 CULTURAL STRIKE GOES NATIONAL ON JUNE 12 🚨

Following the local May 8 Strike at the 61st Venice Biennale, with 30 national pavilions, 2 collateral exhibitions, and 15 In Minor Keys artists participating, the struggle for Palestine and workers' rights is going national on June 12.

We are calling for a national general cultural strike, the result of months of grassroots organizing by Italian cultural workers' groups and assemblies in coalition with trade unions. This strike connects the precarious conditions that affect cultural workers to the broader fight against the institutions that enable genocide through art-washing and arms funding. Because the conditions that make cultural work unstable—short contracts, unpaid labour, no benefits, no job security—are the same conditions that allow institutions to look away from genocide.

Our DEMANDS are:
1. Valuing cultural work
2. Fair work and fair pay
3. Universal welfare
4. Whole-person health
5. No arms money and no art-washing

✊ NO BIENNALE AS USUAL ✊

OVER 3,500 TURN OUT IN HISTORIC MARCH FOR PALESTINE AND WORKERS’ RIGHTS

On 8 May 2026, ANGA delivered the first cultural strike at the Venice Biennale in decades with 30 pavilions fully or partially closed, and reduced staffing at the ticket offices and bookshop.

In solidarity with the cultural workers’ strike and to say no to the Genocide Pavilion, over 3,500 people marched on Viale Garibaldi to the Arsenale, filling the street and waterfront with banners and Palestine flags.

The strike was the outcome of months of organising by ANGA together with local activist groups Sale Docks, Mi Riconosci? and Biennalocene, with unions joining and guaranteeing protection to striking members.

Speeches were made by ANGA, union members and striking Biennale participants. Among those who marched and spoke:

🗣️ Gabrielle Goliath, whose exhibition Elegy—mourning victims of Israel’s genocide in Gaza—was abruptly pulled by the South African government before finding an independent home at the Chiesa di Sant’Antonin in Castello.

🗣️ Belgium Pavilion curator Caroline Dumalin made public her team’s refusal to be part of the Biennale prizes, which are devoid of legitimacy after the Jury was forced to resign. She said that this is a way to honour the legacy of the late Koyo Kouoh.

🗣️ Ending the march, Mohammed Joha, In Minor Keys main exhibition artist, shared his words. He stood before the crowd and spoke plainly: “I want to remind the world that Palestine is from the river to the sea, from ‘48 to Gaza. Free Palestine. We are only one body.”

The march eventually blocked the main entrance to the Arsenale where riot police attacked peaceful protestors as they tried to pass, causing injuries. While the march continued successfully, ANGA condemns this police brutality against cultural workers exercising their democratic right to protest.

ANGA’s strike call was a response to the appeal of Palestinian civil society to challenge the normalisation of Israeli apartheid and occupation on international cultural platforms.

Together in our thousands, the people in solidarity for Palestine and the future of the world. taken in Venice, Italy by @biennalocene

Today, the artists @jakub.jansa @selmecikockajusko and curator @sssitdownnn of the Czech and Slovak Pavilion joined the strike in solidarity with the @angalliance initiative calling for the exclusion of the Israeli Pavilion from the Venice Biennale. We believe cultural institutions cannot remain neutral in the face of ongoing mass violence and humanitarian catastrophe. @biennalocene foto @jankolsky by @biennalocene

NO ART-WASHING IN LAGUNA
STOP AL PADIGLIONE GENOCIDIO
8 maggio concentramento Via Garibalidi (altezza Esedra)
ore 16:30
