This week on Everything Is Broken, @kevinselection sits down with Craig Mannix (@big_c1), who spent 30 years inside Canada’s major label system, working at BMG, Sony, Virgin, and Tommy Boy🎙️

Mannix talks about what the music industry lost when it stopped taking risks, what it means to be Black in a white-dominated business, and how reconnecting with his vinyl collection brought him back to life.

🎧 Tune in for this week’s episode on The Verge (Ch. 173) on September 26th at 7PM EST or stream anytime after via the link in bio. by @big_c1

Bummed to have missed seeing my brother, Pos post-his fantastic @wearedelasoul performance at the Toronto date of the @erykahbadu / @alanthechemist tour last night and sorry to have not been able to link with Alchemist either. But got to hang with a bunch of the T.dot homies from time and chop it up with @djmaseo at the end to cap an absolutely legendary night. It’s Thank you, Dave forever of course, but Thank you, Pos and Thank you, Mase needs to be screamed from rooftops too while we are blessed to have you continue the De La legacy!* 💐🙏🏾❤️👊🏾

And can’t forget to also say thank you, @moluv4nyc and @tomsilverman for giving me a shot to work with some of my biggest heroes in music. It’s been an honor and a blessing to know and have worked with you guys all these years.

* and of course for the tickets.

Very excited to be a part of Do It For The Culture, happening August 27–29.

To all artists, creatives, songwriters and producers: come check us out and connect with CMRRA. It’s important that you understand your rights, your royalties, and how to make sure you’re getting what you’re entitled to.

I’m looking forward to meeting you, building with the Vancouver creative community, and sharing some knowledge.

Some of the most influential figures in hip hop aren’t always the ones on stage—they’re the ones shaping the culture behind the scenes. We’re pleased to welcome Craig “Big C” Mannix to Bag of Trix.

For more than three decades, Craig Mannix has been one of the most respected executives and cultural leaders in Canadian music. He began his career in the early 1990s at Virgin Records Canada (after earlier work as a street representative for Tommy Boy and contributions to Street Sound magazine and MuchMusic). He went on to hold senior marketing and A&R roles at EMI Music Canada, Sony Music Entertainment Canada, and Universal Music Canada, where he served as Senior Director of Urban Marketing before being promoted to Vice President of Black Music in 2022. In 2025 he joined the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency (CMRRA) as Industry Relations Consultant – Community Engagement, while also running his consulting practice, Big Consulting.

Throughout his career, Mannix has played a pivotal role in the development and promotion of Canadian artists including Kardinal Offishall, k-os, Choclair, and Pressa, while also leading campaigns for major international names. He has long championed Black music in Canada, helping build infrastructure and visibility for the culture.

Beyond the labels, he founded and ran the lifestyle marketing agency Offshoot Communications, working with brands such as Nike, adidas and Nokia. He is a founding member of ADVANCE, co-chairs the Board of Directors of The Remix Project, and has served on the boards of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall. He previously represented Canada on Universal Music Group’s Task Force for Meaningful Change and has consistently focused on creating opportunities for the next generation of Canadian artists and music professionals.

Big C shares longstanding relationships with several members of Bag of Trix. That history gives him a unique perspective on the crew’s rise and the broader Toronto hip hop community that surrounded it. His firsthand knowledge of the artists, dancers, promoters, and industry figures who helped build the scene makes him an invaluable voice in telling the story of Bag of Trix. by @big_c1

I’ve had the privilege of welcoming artists and creatives to Toronto for over 35 years, and I can honestly say that @wallo267 brought some of the most positive energy I’ve ever experienced.

His outlook on success is on another level, and it’s clear we’re aligned on the importance of culture, community, and creating opportunities for others.

That was on full display during his talk at @theremixproject earlier this week. Inspiring, authentic, and impactful.

Thank you, Wallo. by @big_c1
