Two weeks after Mama and I left Daddy, we went back for some of our things.

Mama slid down in the passenger seat.

I went to the door alone.

Daddy was waiting.

It took me almost fifty years to write what happened next.

Over 25 years ago, Dale Earnhardt and I stood outside an interview talking about our daddies.

His daddy was a race car driver.

Mine was a bird dog man.
