Spent the weekend in the Mojave Desert roaming the desert and documenting for @mojavenps coordinated by @overlandbound and mapping/documenting dispersed camp sites. Flowers were in full bloom in a rainbow of colors. Rig was fantastic.

Also found a 40 years old tortoise and very gently moved him off the road.

Three of the four are out of the stables to enjoy the California sun.
Troopy is still in the build. Swapped a 2H/H42 with a 1HDFT/H152 and front coil conversion as well as 79 series axles. The back will be finished soon.
The 60 series has a 15BFT/H55 and 500000 miles. It is our trusted steed.
The 80 was swapped to 1HDFT/h151 and has 100000 miles since the swap roaming the US, Canada and Alaska.

In the stable still BJ40 with a 13BT/H55.

What a life…

4000 miles on the troopy. Took a long trip to Flagstaff and back. Tried it to 90mph on the highway. It kept going but I backed down.

Galley is powder coated and rock sliders installed by @trail.tailor Jason did a fantastic custom job.

600 miles on the troopy (Arena???). Electrical infrastructure in place. Finishing the galley. All doors aluminum latch with magnets.

Almost ready for gray powder coat. The bench will open to a bed so allows accommodation for 4 people. I’ll add seat belts on the bench.

Rig is driving. 300 miles on it. Been working on the galley/ cabinet. Corian counter top. Built in fridge @nationalluna , sink, drawers from airline trolley, and 8” long coat hanger closet. Removed the hi hrs and latches from the fridge and attached L aluminum so I can SIKA the Corian counter top the lid. Embedded in the Corian 2 steel strips so I can attach the hinges and latches.

After a snag. Lost a nut of the rebuilt PS pump by a local shop inside the engine. Shattered the timing gears cover and took while to get a replacement. Put 8 miles now. Baby steps.

Big Red will share this account with this new rig. I was thinking “Arena” which means sand in Spanish. Troopy came from hard work and abuse in Nicaragua. So it FINALLY hit the road. @valley_hybrids Installed @terraintamer4wd springs, shocks and brakes. It drives like a dream. Now the work begins on the interior.

Installed an 80 series electric speedometer to replace the ‘cable’ one. Only troopy with mph. 😃

Also listening to the engine, videos don’t really need music.

@astott_overland thanks for introducing me to @longrangeamerica. Took the HDJ80 up to Tahoe then down to Reno, slept in the forest 2 hours south of Bend at 17F, and then stop at @fitgarage for a short time and crossed the mountains to Corvallis. Car did 22.5 mpg so I figured 830 miles on a tank. Love it not to fill diesel in CA.

Before all that stopped at @valley_hybrids and started first time the 1HDFT in the troopy. It’s on the rack installing @terraintamer4wd shocks and springs. Exciting!!!

100000 miles since the diesel engine swap 5 years ago. A bit less the 5000 gallons of fuel. Engine runs as the same day it was installed. We have done long 30 days trips as well as short weekends to the California deserts. Just enjoying this beautiful country.

Have been working the last few months building up the 1HDFT engine for the troopy. In the last minute I decided to take off the head for inspection and found out cracks. Ended up ordering a 1HDFTE head from Japan with new valves and the works. One valve cover bolt is off and I may have the machine shop modify it or use a YanMar cover.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have not started the troopy project, but I’m at a point of no return.
