Welcome to Big Cone South! 2024 was a huge year for me, with so many changes and new stuff that I spent almost zero time at the Big Cone cabin studio. I moved to this beautiful home in June, and I am finally getting my back bedroom studio set up now. I will be leaving the dyeing and ink making (messy stuff) at the cabin studio for now, but am moving the painting and sewing (and all the other "cleaner stuff") to my home studio. I love that little place, but it's now 20 minutes away, and after over a full year of having it, I realize it is COLD and WET in the winter and so fucking HOT in the summer, so I will appreciate some temperature control lol. I still have plenty of big-ass cones, quail, and charm out here, as well as way more oaks, a pond, and turkeys. The new challenge is lots of land to maintain; so many thistles, burrs, and mullein, holy moly! I wonder what dyes and inks I can make with all these south county weeds. 🤪 Early morning misty view of trees from Big Cone South by @bigcone.zone

uh-oh I've caught a fugitive! I knew pokeberry ink faded, but my god, it REALLY fades. A few days ago --> november 2023 😮 Pokeberry ink swatch in March 2024 that has faded to a rusty brown by @bigcone.zone

It's soooooo cold at big cone. I have two space heaters that do the trick, but it takes forever and I'm too old to sit in that climate. I wait for the warmer days to go over and work, so less is happening right now. *extremely terminator voice* I'll be back Close up of blue fabric with several intersecting lines of multicolored fabric, which is part of a year-long quilting challenge I am working on. by @bigcone.zone

This is the first large (it's all relative, baby) quilt I have made since 1994 or 95. It's an improv quilt made from all reclaimed fabrics except the pale pink, which is that muslin I dyed with avocado pits this summer, and the patterned piece in the center(ish), which is yardage from a repeating pattern I drew. The checkerboard section was from a fun hour-long quilt block challenge that felt right to incorporate here. Fold-over binding (backing fabric is a gray sheet), wool yarn ties felted to bobbles in a wash/dry cycle. The first bits started in summer (I think actually it was spring, but who knows anymore) 2023, picked up again in the last weeks of 2023, and finished January 15, 2024. It was a birthday gift, and it arrived safely at its destination. 😅 Here are a few photos of the process.... by @bigcone.zone

THE REVEAL (sort of! I simply cannot capture the subtleties of these pinks). This is a pile of silk, linen, and cotton scraps dyed with avocado pits, and it was the very definition of SLOW DYEING. It had been years since I had done it, so it may as well have been my first time. I made plenty of first-time mistakes! 🤠 A little uneven, but so charming. The silk was natural to start, not white, so it is darker then the linen and cotton, but not quite as much as in the photos. And the others are darker than in the photos! So split the diff. I started the dye on Sunday, and hung the fabric to dry on Wednesday. Now it will sit for a week before I rinse it because I used soy milk as a binder (it is not technically a mordant), so it needs all the time it can get touching that color. It will likely fade over the years, but I am okay with that. And ready for more! A stack of pink silk, linen, and cotton in my hand by @bigcone.zone

My first ink! I started nice and simple with beautiful poisonous poke berries. The berries came from both my backyard and the Pine Grove Cemetery in Nevada City, CA. I made the ink at Big Cone—its inaugural color! I had a filter/funnel mishap, so lost about 1/4 down the drain, but just like you gotta leave some berries on the plant for the cedar waxwings, the mighty pipe demands its share 😈 Poke berry ink swirling in the water left in the sink after filling bottles by @bigcone.zone
