I have one more rather special pedal from my own collection which has just gone up for sale on my website. I nicknamed this one the King Fuzz XXL. This takes the King Fuzz, adds a 3 band EQ, and tops it all off with a Mid-boost toggle switch. Selecting up gives you pushed British tones, and down gives you scooped American sounds. It’s finished in Ocean Turquoise Metallic nitro lacquer, and it sounds as good as it looks.

My new album ‘Zems’ is out today on all music platforms.

The inspiration to make this record came in 2024 at the Birmingham Guitar Show, where I played a captivating instrument built by Jacob Menear. It was an acoustic baritone, which sits halfway between a guitar and a bass, and I loved its unique voice so much that I began planning to re-record a collection of my songs tuned down low (zems in Latvian). Eighteen months later, I finally plucked up the courage to ask Jake if I could borrow the guitar. One week later, it arrived at my door.

I made this album in the Bigfoot workshop over the course of nine days in late autumn 2025. I wanted to create an intimate and honest record, following the story of my grandad who fled Latvia during WWII. He was thirty four years old, the same age as me when I composed the opening piece ‘1944’. He left everyone and everything behind, but made it to England as a refugee of war where he went on to start a family of his own.

Forty seven years later, when the Soviet Union collapsed, he was finally able to return home. Miraculously, he was reunited with his little sister. This record closes with ‘Liktendarzs’, the first ever solo I composed for guitar. It’s named after a memorial garden built on an island in the middle of a river in Latvia. It’s a celebration of the enduring strength of human spirit, where every flower sewn and every stone laid has been donated in someone’s honour. Our family planted a tree there in 2011 in memory of my grandad Elmars and his sister Elza, so that their story will live on long after we’re gone.
