Sometimes I don’t think I give myself enough credit for just how far I’ve come. I think about that young girl from Baxter Terrace Projects “Lil Channy” YOUNG, HURT, ANGRY , and carrying pain she didn’t even fully understand yet. Losing my grandparent changed something inside of me. Grief introduced me to a kind of pain at a young age that I didn’t know how to explain, so sometimes that pain came out as anger. But even through all of that, there was always something inside of me that knew I wanted more. I wanted better. I looked at where I came from and made a decision that my environment would be a part of my story, but it would never determine how my story ended. I refused to become another statistic. I refused to believe that because of where I was raised, what I witnessed, what I went through, or what I lost, that my life had already been decided for me.And when I look at myself today, I still see Lil Channy. I see the little girl who had no idea how many battles she would have to fight. I see the teenager trying to figure life out while carrying grief. I see the young woman determined to make something of herself.

I’m proud that life didn’t make my heart cold. I’m proud that pain didn’t destroy my ability to love. I’m proud that I kept dreaming. I’m proud that every time life knocked me down, somehow I found the strength to get back up.

I’m still becoming. I still have healing to do, dreams to accomplish, and chapters of my life that haven’t even been written yet. But today, I’m not focusing on how far I still have to go.

I survived things that were supposed to break me.
I outgrew environments that could have consumed me.
