Someone who identified himself as a WordPress designer on blue app mentioned that terminal knowledge is not necessary in WordPress development. I didn’t argue with him, I simply said, “Okay Sir.” But it’s important to educate the public properly because many people entering web development may misunderstand the difference between basic website setup and professional development environments.

The truth is, the terminal may not be compulsory for someone building very basic WordPress websites with page builders alone, but in professional WordPress development, terminal usage becomes extremely valuable. Once you move beyond drag-and-drop design into serious development, performance optimization, server management, WooCommerce infrastructure, theme engineering, plugin development, automation, and security, terminal knowledge becomes part of a modern workflow.

One major area where the terminal becomes useful is in WordPress theme and plugin development. Professional developers regularly use Composer for dependency management, npm for frontend tooling, Git for version control, and build tools like Vite, Webpack, or Gulp for compiling assets. Most of these tools operate through the terminal. Without command-line knowledge, managing modern development workflows becomes slower and less efficient. Even creating custom plugin structures, debugging errors, running package installations, or managing local development environments often requires terminal access.

WP-CLI is another powerful reason terminal knowledge matters. WP-CLI allows developers to manage WordPress directly from the command line. With a few commands, developers can install WordPress, update plugins and themes, clear caches, manage databases, create users, perform search-and-replace operations, and automate repetitive tasks. For agencies and developers handling multiple websites, this saves enormous amounts of time and improves efficiency significantly.
