God, they said I wouldn’t make it — they’d already wrote my obituary by twenty-one. I was labeled, disowned, told I wouldn’t be a man, called a bad father and a mistake. Abandonment became the most fluent language in my life, but I learned to speak back in work. I turned every cold shoulder into coal, and used it to forge a furnace.

Pain became my fuel, failure my scripture. I didn’t hide from the darkness; I studied it until I could name the stars. This associate degree is more than letters on paper — it’s an alibi for my future, a deposit in my daughter’s account, a ledger for the few who kept believing when most walked away. To the teacher who said I’d be dead in prison by twenty-one: thank you. Your words were a map I refused to follow.

To those who abandoned me: your absence taught me presence. To my daughter: every late night, every class, every sacrifice is your inheritance. To the ones who never left: your faith was my currency. Driving home, I didn’t see it at first—a semi-truck tire, abandoned in the middle of I-94 east. In a single, devastating instant, my world changed. The tire tore through my hood, shredded my underbody, cut my brake line, destroyed my radiator, engine, and transmission. My “co-workers” drove past, indifferent, leaving me in the chaos. But I am here. I am alive.

God’s hand was on me, shielding me when the world seemed blind to my struggle. I felt the weight of life and death, and yet, I am still breathing. This night, this wreck, it wasn’t just a disaster—it was a reminder that my story isn’t finished. My journey, my purpose, my fight—they’re far from over. I’ve been given another chapter, and I intend to write it with courage.
