This piece has floated around for several years feeling unfinished. I left it hanging next to the ceiling in my studio, never knowing what to do with it, but trusting that one day I’d get it sorted out. That’s how most of my projects go.
Over the last year and a half I have been working closely with @bunker.creations to collaborate on art projects, and the barnyard seemed like the perfect painting to frame.
We built a custom frame, oiled it, and mounted the giant canvas inside it. We got it safely to the market to display, and while prepping to mount it, a drill bit went through the canvas. We had to pull it from the show before anyone saw it.
Back to the studio with it I had to repair the hole, touch up a large portion of the sky, and remount it to the frame.
The process got me thinking about the old barns, just like the old elevators I love. Without layers of paint, without repairs, without protection, they will fall quickly into disrepair. I can’t save all these old building but I really enjoy trying to capture the feeling of seeing those structures scattered across the Saskatchewan prairies.
Sometimes you have to put that little extra in to keep it from falling apart.
After the canvas was framed again, I felt like I had to do something unique with the wood as a reminder of the extra layer of paint that had to be added after this piece was framed and ready to hang. The sky slightly changes, and it shifted slightly across the frame.
This piece wouldn’t look like this if it wasn’t for an accidental hole put through the painting, and I’m grateful that the opportunity allowed me to embrace it and use it as a new creative expression. by @bigmitchone

Just making a mess in the studio lately.
Sometimes paintings sit here for too long so I just add more layers. Sometimes it works out and inspires a new direction. Sometimes it just ruins a perfectly good painting.
Excited to continue messing this one up by @bigmitchone

Thank you Mitch and Derek for coming out to paint last weekend!

This piece is inspired by vintage comics & prairie scenes, with an incredible spray-paint twist.

Amazing to have you guys come to our town to paint something fresh and exciting!
