Join us next Saturday at @bigrampphilly for the opening of the next exhibit site in Eco-Social Realism featuring the work of Cynthia Hooper, Sarah Kanouse, and Sean Starowitz.

Eco-Social Realism brings together artworks that show an increased in-
terest in infrastructural and bioregional practices that can visualize and
embody the territorial scale of both problems and solutions related to the
climate crisis. Hooper, Kanouse and Starowitz’s explorations of water and
electrical infrastructure through personal, observational and playful methods demonstrate a range of aesthetic and political commitments.

This is the 3rd exhibit in this series and was supported by @collectivefutures.info - See you at Big Ramp (2024 East Westmoreland Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19134, United States)! taken in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by @bigrampphilly

BIG RAMP is thrilled to announce Shifting Winds, a group exhibition showcasing the work of three artists whose distinct bodies of work share a push and pull between intellectual structures and emotional, sensual generosity as they navigate psychological boundaries and survival strategies.

In distilled, iconographic gouache and acrylic paintings, Lindsay Deifik explores personal themes of autonomy, exploitation, anxiety, failure, and liberation. Barbs, fences, and barriers hold the viewer at a distance—yet are permeable patterns that let light and air through. Lindsay’s neon hues command attention, searing the viewer’s retina like sunlight, while softer pastels recall the ephemeral shadows of light on pale surfaces.

Seeking to impose structure on unwieldy experiences, Emmy Thelander’s methods encompass ordered control and intuitive, spontaneous mark-making, mirroring the complexity and messiness of a life attempting to be well-lived. With chart-like paintings that variously blend precision with play, there is an element of active unknowing, appearing as logical efforts in ascribing meaning and order. Diagramming her subjective experience in the present becomes an attempt to predict the future.

Making grounds and paints from scratch, Dani Levine approaches painting as a negotiation, where form and material collide and ideas of adaptation unfold. In this sense, her work draws on what resists resolution: the (mis)behavior of pigments, a surface’s willingness to work with or against design, a form’s capacity to stretch, a gesture’s tendency to stray.

All three artists engage in an ongoing conversation with their viewers—uncertain, searching, and exploring the tensions between structure and intuition, control and vulnerability, order and resistance. Their work shares similarities in color and texture—contrasting matte and neon colors, absorbent surfaces that recall weathered walls and fresco, and camouflage. by @bigrampphilly

We're throwing a book launch!

Philly folks - join us online! The Big Ramp event has been cancelled for heat and smoke! Stay safe!

Jazmyn Crosby @jazmynmay wrote and riso printed the wonderful Other Networks: Interspecies Communication Operations Manual, in part researched during her stay with us last summer.

Thursday, July 16 from 4:30-7:30 our time / 6:30-9:30 Philadelphia time we're celebrating with a multi-venue book launch! There will be readings, a performance, and some listening and making activities!

We'll be hosting at the main lab in Boulder (1320 Grandview Ave.) and we'll be open for some all-too-rare evening open house hours.

The whole thing will also be streaming between locations and on our twitch channel (https://www.twitch.tv/mediaarchaeology)

Copies of the book will be available for purchase/suggested donation! by @bigrampphilly

🐄📺 🧂📺
Cow TV and Salt TV are two video projections on view at @jazmynmay show, Teleplasm Hotline. Open Saturdays from 2-4pm.

Both videos playfully and inquisitively ruminate on our human perceptions of the more-than-human world. We might ask what's the difference between a cow and a cryptid (e.g. Sasquatch)? Perspective? Belief? Language?

What separates ourselves from the salt of the sea? The zinc of our pennies? The cute gallery cats that love to visit Big Ramp? Physically, very little. Is it mostly a question of form rather than truth or essence?

Jazmyn asks us to perceive ourselves and our world through different physical and conceptual lenses and even different senses (we hear Cow TV and Salt TV only if we tune into the FM frequencies that invisibly fill the space, both inside the gallery and out). by @bigrampphilly
