After 99 shows, I might have cracked it…
The temperature outside has dropped, meaning the return of hot and steamy windows inside the packed and very vibe On Air HiFi bar.
Music wise, it might just be one of my favourite sets of the 99 shows so far.
Sometimes there’s a flow, a vibe that you can ride from start to finish, and this felt like one of those. Apart from a pesky bit of needle fluff, and one beer too many deep into hour 3 - its about as good as I can hope to give. Selection wise it is on the sharpest of points.
There’s harmonicas, wurlitzer organs, and all kinds of keys. There’s P-Funk, street soul, balearic rave, alt disco, boogie, britfunk, deepness, ambience, disco, and even a bit of acid pop c/o Rod. Oh and a new Sade edit. There’s always a Sade edit…

I had the pleasure of being joined @onair_1btn HiFi bar by the marvelous @soundsofharris AKA Marley Harris.
We played 3 hrs of boogie, folk, soul, broken beat, deep house, electronica, and disco live on @1btnradio
Marley has his own show on 1BTN, and his own Fortune Of War residency ‘Off The Hook’. He’s all over Insta with his excellent, entertaining and informative ‘On The Flip’ music posts. And he’s put in star turns at @cafe_1001 for @daydream_disco and an epic next gen show with @saintlukez @the_bbe_store as part of the Make House Deep Again movement.
We go through all the gears, across all the generations and genres. It’s a goodie.

It’s been a minute.

In the spring an album slipped out that’s been slowly building in my subconscious over the summer months.

What’s It Gonna Be by producer and multi instrumentalist - Tom Funk @dj_tom_funk and co produced by @oznid

In a way it’s an old school album - live instrumentation, soul vocals, influences from neo soul, the hip hop golden age, the jazz funk of Roy Ayers, and a trusty Rhodes chord or two. But it also feels of the now.

It also feels very British, and very London.

And maybe something that’s been missing.

Songs, lyrics, vibes, and a human feel.

It’s loose and cosmic but also tight and syncopated. It’s also full of guest vocal talent. When @omar_lyefook is casually thrown in on track 3, you know the standard will be high. Tom seems to have engaged some of the UK’s finest vocalists - @valentinarussomusic for the mercurial Spilt my Wine 🍷, @braeleni for the mighty fine opening track Coming Back, and the battle hardened @andreespeutmusic floats over many of the other tracks.

@groovearchive.co have done a much better review, which I’ve posted on the carousel. They summed it up as ‘Cosmic Residue and Gritty Grooves’, and I think that about nails it.

Thanks to @the_mighty_zaf for the heads up.

Only 500 were pressed and will ever be pressed on Toms own @lazy_robot_records. A few copies are still knocking around if you want to own a future classic.

It’s also on streaming platforms for normal people.

This Saturday, I’m delighted to be joined live on @1btnradio and live @onair_1btn Hifi bar, by one of the next generation’s most talented DJ’s - @soundsofharris AKA Marley Harris.
As a @1btnradio stablemate, he’s also building a strong reputation in his own right.
He’s gained a big Insta following with his excellent, entertaining and informative 'On The Flip' music posts; and put in star turns at his own @fortuneofwar residency, Off The Hook, as well as at @cafe_1001 for @daydream_disco, and an epic next gen show with @saintlukez @the_bbe_store as part of the @makehousedeep movement.
His taste is soulfully rooted and spans deep house, broken beat, jazz and afro.
He is, also a literal baller ⛹️🏀.
This will be a good one - come down or tune in.

Fuck it. I’m gonna do a separate post for these dudes. One of the most exciting bands I’ve seen for years Knats (@knatsncl)
Think punk jazz? Geordie Jazz Noir? If Artic Monkeys made jazz?
Pure, boundless youthful energy, swagger and attitude, meets jazz virtuosity, uncompromising geordie heart and soul, and lyricism forged in steel.
Given they just got @mercuryprize nominated it was surprising to see them billed on one of the smaller stages at a jazz rooted festival but they didn’t seem to care. Videos and pics don’t do them justice. They are totally unique and brilliant.
@stan__woodward is the ultimate front man and bass axe slinger supreme. Literally shooting from the hip. Locked in with @king.ie killing it on drums. A brass section to die for, overlaid with the hairy poetical heavy genius of @coopsie_xoxo with heavy themes offset by musical joy and optimism.
It really is rock and roll in its truest sense.
I first saw these guys @alphabetbrighton a couple of years ago as backing band for @eddie_chacon_ and they were incredible then. Now out on their own they’re even better.
They will be main stagers before long, trust me. taken in We Out Here Festival by @bigredal1
