“The Muse” was one of those dream collaboration projects I still go back to for inspiration. For the first issue of AS IF Magazine I photographed fashion muse, @michellevioly in the original Tiffany & Co. boutique in Union Square. Gifted artist and Illustrator @bildonovan created “imagined” fashion with multimedia over the prints. I then photographed the painted prints and printed the story in our first issue.
Yes kids, this was years before AI, when we had to generate ideas with our own brains, and artwork with our own hands and bodies. It may sound archaic, but it was a shit load more fun than looking at a screen for hours!

And as for the original Tiffany & Co. building in Union Square? It was architecturally dismantled years before this shoot. It’s now a condo. As for the iconic Tiffany & Co. building on 5th Ave? That’s gone too. Replaced by a cold and soulless airport inspired mall. It’s still Tiffany, but NOT the Tiffany us New Yorkers cherished. Jackie Kennedy Onassis would have never allowed that to happen. But alas, just like this project, we can always look back on what we find beautiful and forge our paths with that ideal in mind. 🤩💫

Remembering.
I had been asked to facilitate a master class in fashion drawing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in July 2023.
The room was packed with over 60 participants and as I was warming up, I saw my niece Samantha and her godfather, Kenny towards the front of the room near my drawing table.
I presented a series of exercises with demos and then visited each guest to comment on their drawings.
Everyone was so serious and reverent to the surroundings of the “MET”. As I came to Kenny’s drawings, he uncovered one, that had an endearing message. Above his sketch he had written “F*#K You Billy Donovan!!!!”, we looked at one another and lost it.
I called him out, “Folk’s this is Kenneth Bonavitacola, my friend, who just wrote the most vulgar comment to me on his drawing” Should I read it? The audience also laughed.
After that introduction I spoke sincerely of his talent, career and the depth of love, humor and a life-long relationship between two boys from South Philadelphia that transcended boundaries. by @bildonovan
