My dad was a gardener. Never really enjoyed this line of work as a kid. Yet in my backyard, I had a few empty spaces and thought it might make sense to plant various types of milkweed--the host plant for Monarch caterpillars. Different varieties of milkweed are the only food source for Monarch caterpillars. I planted several types of milkweeds and a few weeks later discovered at least three caterpillars. In about 4-5 five days, this caterpillar will wander around for perfect spot to change into a chrysalis and then--days later--become a Monarch butterfly.

You can help, too, by planting native Milkweeds in your garden and by avoiding the use of pesticides. Special thanks to Kentaro for offering his tips on how to grow milkweed. And to @armstronggarden for giving me tips on how to get rid of aphids without using pesticides. by @billimada

One of the best ways to understand a community is to visit a farmers market. And right here in my Westchester neighborhood is a small gathering of vendors, including @kentaro.yamauchi, who offers an array of plants for your home and garden. My dad was a gardener and loved working in the garden. Therefore, I thought I should do something in my own garden. Kentaro-san featured some of his milkweed, the plants favored by Monarch larvae/caterpillars. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss, pesticides, and a lack of milkweed in our neighborhoods, I asked Kentaro-san to give me all of his plants. He dropped them off this afternoon and I made room for them in my backyard. With any luck, some of the monarchs will find these plants to lay their eggs. We need monarchs. They are essential pollinators like bees. If you have a chance, find Kentaro-san at your local farmers market and purchase plants for your garden. by @billimada
