The hardest lesson I ever learned, snd how it led to this week’s announcement of Strength Global - a massive new effort to get school meals to children around the world. Read my new Substack column at link in bio.

Share Our Strength is blessed to have Hugh Jackman as a supporter, as am I to have him as a friend. The rumors are true: He’s about the nicest guy on the planet – generous, authentic, a great dad, and devoted to sharing his strengths on behalf of the global community. His post about my recent Substack column brought thousands of new viewers and created deeper awareness of our No Kid Hungry campaign. Thank you, Hugh! Link to my Substack in bio. Norimoto Bakery in Portland, Maine, winner of a James Beard Award, is one of Portland’s hidden gems. The building does not even have the bakery’s name on it. When we got there I focused on the pastries, a minor obsession of mine. As usual, Rosemary was attentive to something more important - the one sign taped to the window. I love everything about that sign: that it speaks directly to kids (from three nearby schools); that it prioritizes their comfort and dignity, that it strikes a bargain to be kind, and that it is so important it is the only thing in the window. The New National Hunger ... For Dignity
As Pope Leo has taught, when we judge people only by their economic utility, we diminish their dignity …. and ours. Dignity, always important, seems to strike even more of a nerve when in short supply. So as we head into a weekend cage fight on the lawn of the White House, and into the November mid-term elections which may look indistinguishable, as we learn of unprecedented personal enrichment of elected officials, and the continued struggles of our neighbors, let’s be sure that even the most sophisticated food policy agenda includes a dignity agenda as well. Chefs Cycle 2026 is in the record books – and deserves to be. An epic ride – climbing 4800 feet of steep hills on the first day alone (and 9 hours in the saddle for me and my riding group) pushed us to the limit and cemented a community that’s forever committed to ending childhood hunger. More than $1.25 million raised, which means thousands more kids getting school breakfast and summer meals. Thanks to Rosemary, my own personal SAG (Support and Gear vehicle!) for always for getting me through. (More reflections on this and other adventures at my weekly Substack column https://billyshore.substack.com/ LINK IN BIO.)Happy to support anyone that offers to ride in my place next year! @ChefsCycle #NoKidHungry #childhoodhunger #nutrition #sharingstrength #solvableproblem by @billshore

Trying to keep up with my own shadow is nothing compared to keeping up with the amazing Chefs Cycle riders who will be convening on Bend, Oregon in just two weeks for our 200-mile bike ride over two days! We’re about to hit $1 million raised, all of which supports our No Kid Hungry campaign. I’m trying to raise $50,000 of that, and getting very close. Thanks to all who donated so generously so far. Blessed to have so many caring and supportive friends. https://lnkd.in/ecwvJg4r. (Link to donate also in bio)

If it feels like this is one of the more extreme way to share one’s strength, that’s because the cuts to food assistance programs for children and families have been even more extreme. The times demand we do everything in our power, and then some, to turn things around. When you combine chefs on bikes raising millions of dollars, with partners like Macy’s, Citi, #Kia Albertsons Companies Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Jeff Bridges, Andra Day, Hugh Jackman, Hickory Farms, Kellogg’s, Kellanova, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Atmos Energy Corp., and hundreds more then change is not only likely but inevitable. Childhood hunger is a solvable problem. Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry partners are solving it. #ChefsCycle #NoKidHungry #hunger #nutrition childhoodhunger biking cycling BendOregon by @billshore

“The woods are lovely dark and deep
But I have promises to keep
and miles to go before I sleep,
and miles to go before I sleep”

It’s as if Robert Frost knew we had just 22 days until our 200 mile Chefs Cycle ride for No Kid Hungry, I’m so grateful to the many friends who have put me in striking distance ($40,750) of my $50,000 goal toward the more than $1 million we will raise to expand school breakfast and summer meals, and protect SNAP.

This ride is the essence of sharing strength and getting to the finish line. As is the case with ending childhood hunger, it will take everything we’ve got. Most important of all, it demonstrates that we are all capable of more than we think we are. Thanks for whatever you can do to help us reach the goal: https://p2p.onecause.com/chefscycle26/william-shore. LINK TO DONATE also in bio.

Amazing to be invited back to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange this week.
It’s often been said that Share Our Strength is run like a business, which is usually shorthand for professionalism, financial acumen, commitment to return on investment (which in our case is via impact in reducing childhood hunger, more than financial return), and accountability to shareholders - not only our donors but the children and families we aspire to serve. Maybe that’s why the New York Stock Exchange invited Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign to be featured once again at the ringing of the closing bell. We asked one of the greatest business and community leaders we know, Macy’s CEO Tony Spring to do the honors – and also honored him at our annual No Kid Hungry dinner that evening.

In her remarks. our CEO Anne Filipic made the great point that the NYSE was a fitting venue because it symbolizes transformational investment, which is what Share Our Strength’s investment in child nutrition is all about. The NYSE also symbolizes the creation of wealth – corporate in their case, but a different kind of wealth in ours: community wealth that goes back into the communities we serve via healthier kids, higher performing schools, stronger local economies.

Childhood hunger is America’s most solvable problem. Public-private partnerships, state and local leaders, chefs, donors, corporate partners and thousands of volunteers are enabling us to solve it. by @billshore

Some evenings are unforgettable. Or maybe all evenings with Rosemary and dear friend Hugh Jackman on hand to introduce me, and 600 guests attending in honor of Macy’s CEO Tony Spring at our annual No Kid Hungry dinner in New York.

Against the backdrop of rising prices and a decimated social safety net, Americans are turning out in droves to insist that no families should have to choose between gas and groceries, and that every child should be free from hunger. Grateful we could share news about the rare outbreak of bipartisanship that means millions more kids getting school breakfast and summer meals. by @billshore
