Industrial acrylic paint and artist's acrylic paint on five aluminium panels
205 x 283cm

I'm really pleased to be showing this painting in the RCA degree show. It combines contradictory painting languages, fusing aspects of abstraction, pop, photo-realism, and minimalism using a methodology I've come to refer to as component-based painting. The piece also brings together a lot of the technical and material research I've been doing during my studies, including freehand airbrush painting, working with translucency, welding, and painting direct to metal.

Come through over the next few days to see it alongside work from my cohort that I'm proud to be showing with.

Friday 19th June - 12:00 - 20:00
Saturday 20th - 12:00 - 18:00
Sunday 21st - 12:00 - 18:00

My eighteenth Scene at Porchester Place - a group show called β€˜the dark speck in the snow globe’, featuring the work of four recently-graduated painters, Billy Myles-Berkouwer, Bunny Hennessey, Eline Boerma and Isaac Andrews - runs until Friday 21 August. Here’s a closer look, in detail, at four of the paintings currently on view. Between them they choreograph the poetic transformation of presence into absence; experience into evanescence, where line tumbles into a humming ground only to exhale, then gust in miasmas of loose, ebullient marks. It’s like watching figuration evaporate into abstraction and, if you give the presentation the time it asks for, Isaac and Billy’s figures really do dehydrate, then vaporise into Bunny and Eline’s nebulae, then fury of colour. If I say so myself, I fucking love this show and I absolutely love these four artists. All ones to watch - very closely, I might add - so feel free to come and take a closer look at their fabulous paintings over the next few weeks. All are always welcome. #emergingartist #artinlondon #onetowatch #contemporarypainting #contemporaryart taken in Porchester Place by @billyberkouwer

π˜–π˜― π˜›π˜©π˜¦ 𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘳, acrylic paint on four artist made aluminium panels, 246x125cm

This painting is an ode to street corners and the advertorial imagery you find on them. This one has a more obvious pop reference than some of my other paintings from this body of work. It also has a joyousness and a kind of humour to it.

The advertorial imagery you find on shops, walls and boards on high streets often go overlooked despite their starkness and saturation because they are so commonplace. If you start to take them in and really look, as I've done so much of for this body of work, you start to find some of these images have a real strangeness and poignancy, particularly when seen in relation to several others. This work brings these dialogues into painted languages, sitting somewhere between pop, abstraction and photo/digital realism.

This painting is on show at @matt_careywilliams gallery until 21st August, alongside work by @isaacandrewsstudio,
@elineboerma and @bunnyhennessey

𝘌𝘺𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘸 π˜›π˜©π˜³π˜¦π˜’π˜₯π˜ͺ𝘯𝘨, acrylic paint and industrial acrylic paint on three aluminium panels, 100x280cm

I'm showing this new painting and some others at Matt Carey-Williams' gallery this month in his next exhibition.

@matt_careywilliams writes - "β€œEyebrow Threading” (2026) is a monumental, starkly horizontal painting in three parts, executed in industrial paint and acrylic on aluminium panels. The left panel shimmers with smeary striations of white, purple and grey pushing constellations of icy white splashes out of the pictorial domain. The ground feels abstract, energetic and distinctly urban, given its metallic palette, support and the graffiti-like marks it registers. The right panel is softer, quieter, revealing the face of a young woman, eyes closed, relaxing as she has her eyebrows threaded. Whilst the face is supple and more flexible than its counterpart panel, it still seems to rest underneath the same jet stream of marks visible in the more abstract left half. Like scars across a hardened, lived skin, these marks test the very beauty that the poster advertising the cosmetic procedure (from which Billy took this image, found on the streets in Shadwell, London) tries to sell. The evaporation of Billy’s image plays out as a dance between image and index; between the industrial nature of its manner and material and the softer (yet distorted) appreciation of the human form. The synergy and simultaneity of both β€˜being’ and β€˜not being’ rests in the artist’s dynamic interplay between languages of abstraction and figuration; vernaculars geometric and expressive. Hard is soft; modelled is flat; shape evokes form only to drift back again into a vortex of marks. Gesture is thus arrived at as a scaffold of structure that refuses its finality, appearing weathered as if some epistemic wind has abraded any sense of certainty. Like time; like the boiling water about to gassify, Billy’s marks become a record of both his intention and his undoing of it. Of what was, is and, ultimately, will be." by @billyberkouwer

The physical act of evaporation finds numerous parallels with the arc of #painting. Both name sets of visual, physical and conceptual strategies whereby form and edge dissolve and substantive presence slips into absence because of the rencounter between liquid, media and environment. When proposed together, the work of Isaac Andrews, Eline Boerma, Bunny Hennessey and Billy Myles-Berkouwer functions as a curatorial connective tissue between a determination for figurative fidelity and an abandonment into abstract dissolution. Each of these newly graduated painters negotiates the journey of the applied or incised mark from legible description to the more ephemeral residue of suggestion, between them demonstrating how marks so easily shift between anchor and vector, simultaneously nourishing pictorial, imagistic meaning whilst empowering its transformation into vaporous atmosphere. This shared journey is one that, poetically and technically, is propelled by β€˜the dark speck in the snow globe’ that haunts and invigorates my next Scene. The snow globe represents the sanctity of how and who β€˜to be’; its speck, the innovation of what and why β€˜not to be’. It’s a not a blot that pollutes or deteriorates, but rather a creative enzyme that doesn’t so much negate the act of mark-making as antagonise a recalibration of the agency of painting, thus highlighting the mellifluous drift and conceptual tensions between states of depiction and ambience and their inevitable submission to each other in the practices of this quartet of future stars. It’s a speck that might infer a compositional or phenomenological lack or loss but which, over time, illuminates its capacity to foster variation; twist the metaphor and offer a different appreciation of the painter’s mark – whether automatic or considered; outlined, smeared or glazed; contoured to narrate or orchestrated to perform pure rhythms of colour. β€˜Scene XVIII: the dark speck in the snow globe’ opens at my space on Porchester Place on Thursday 9 July. Would you like a flake in that? #emergingart #artinlondon #onetowatch #comingsoon taken in Porchester Place by @billyberkouwer

I've been holding back on posting new work for upcoming shows but I thought now I'd start to share some sneak peeks in the lead up. This one is part of "On The Corner", a 4 panel work, acrylic paint on artist-made aluminium panel, 245x125cm

The work draws on imagery found on street corners in London - weathered and uncanny images that often go unnoticed but have a particular resonance. Photo/digital-realist panels are made with industrial materials and combined with panels of gestural abstraction in industrial paints, creating a fusion of modernist abstraction with commercial pop imagery

A detail of "Trial", industrial paint and artist acrylic on two artist-made aluminium panels, 175x100cm

The work contains a portrait of a male subject glancing back at the viewer. Painted in translucent layers over an intense purple-blue abstraction, the panel has a dual picture plane that dances back and forth between abstract and photorealist languages. The abstraction imbues the bust with an affective resonance, recontextualising the painted figure, obscuring its origins, and unsettling the identity of the painted subject.
