I don’t really enjoy being in front of the camera.

I’d much rather be behind it.

But I realized I’ve been sharing places, people and moments without ever saying much about why I’m drawn to them.

My background is in mathematics, and during the week I work in AI.

Photography is what gets me outside. It’s how I experience the world.

Whether it’s the mountains, the ocean, or a quiet portrait, I’m always chasing the same thing:

Light.
Atmosphere.

Not every night needs the Milky Way.

Sometimes it’s just a few stars, some leftover light on the horizon and the silhouettes of the people you’re out there with.

I’ve always been more interested in moments like this.

Nothing spectacular. Just real.

I think every place has two versions.
The one everyone photographs.
And the one you slowly discover after living there for years.
This is my version of Gialova.
The places that never make the postcards, but somehow always felt the most beautiful to me.

We spent two days around Drakolimni in the mountains of Tymfi, sharing the refuge with a group of scientists from Cambridge studying the alpine lake.

The weather changed constantly. Sun when we arrived, storms by the afternoon and then a sudden calm at sunset that made the whole landscape feel unreal.

The next morning we climbed to the lake before the rain returned. The hike was steep, but the moment the lake appeared everything went quiet.

At some point I stopped taking photos altogether. The landscape felt too large to process through a camera.

Seeing the small alpine newts moving through the water, it honestly felt like the lake belonged to them and we were only passing through for a moment. taken in Όρος Τύμφη by @billybonaros

“First light tomorrow?”

We paddled out before sunrise.

The waves never really cleaned up. Mostly closeouts, a few good rides and a lot of duck dives.

But once I slipped underwater with the camera, it stopped being about surfing.

It became about the light, the silence, and the feeling of being inside the ocean for a while.

Most evenings at Lagouvardos end the same way.

The wind drops.
The light gets softer.
Nobody seems in a hurry to leave.

I still find myself choosing between taking the camera out or paddling back into the water. After all these years, I haven’t figured it out yet.

Maybe that’s the reason I keep coming back.

Not just for the waves, but for everything around them. The long afternoons, the people, the conversations in the parking lot, the last light disappearing over the horizon. by @billybonaros

Inside the storm, I almost left.

Then the light hit for a second,
and the wave changed completely.

I remembered something I once read from Chris Burkard
to stay a little longer, to wait for the right moment.

Sometimes all it takes is patience
to see what was already there.
